Well, the NFL gets their dream Super Bowl

For years we have been hearing about how the Super Bowl will be second rate because teams from small markets (read: not in the New York/New England area) will make the Super Bowl less interesting.

Well, they have got their dream match up.

No way in hell did they want this over Green Bay NE. Not even close.

I would never watch (even if I watched). I’m (alas) a Jets fan and can’t stand watching either team.

Bingo

I hate this SuperBowl already, and the two weeks of hype and learning about every third-stringer’s rags to riches story on both teams is going to trigger my gag reflex.

As well as the Giants have played lately, I just don’t forsee them beating NE, especially since NY uses extensive hand signals for their defensive play calls…

Well, at least Chris Berman won’t have to choose between his two Favorite Players Of All Time (Favre & Brady). It can be all Tom Brady, all the time, and he can’t lose.

There’s a Superbowl coming up? You’d think they’d mention something about that here in the local media in Phoenix.

Sigh.

Ok, get this. Today’s Arizona Republic paper had a blurb on the front page touting its “Special 8-page Superbowl Section”! Whatever. What cracks me up is that the center two pages were nothing more than a Verizon ad, and the last page was another ad on 3/4 of the page.

I don’t know. It cracked me up, at least.

And yeah, the dream would have been Packers-Patriots. Especially for my Wisconsin-displaced in-laws.

I thought it should have been the Packers only because they haven’t played the Pats this year. They’d be like the virgin in the summer camp.

Agreed that a Packers-Patriots match-up would have been HUGE, AFAIK both teams have gigantorous fanbases, and everyone loves a rematch!

A Pats-Giants bowl game is… well, meh. The worst case would have been Cowboys-Patriots, it would have most people going “Okay, so who do I want to lose more?”

At least people would’ve watched to root against the teams. Worst case would’ve been Chargers-Giants. The two big stories (Favre’s swansong and the Pats perfect record) in the playoffs not even making it to the Super Bowl.

And I’ll agree that Packers-Patriots would’ve been the “dream match.”

I also agree that Packs-Pats would have been the best match-up from a story perspective for the NFL.

Cowboys-Pats would also have been preferable to the Giants. Considering that Dallas has the largest world wide fan base. It also would have expanded the story geographically; as it stands it is a Northeasterners only game. The Cowboys have a nationwide fan-base, whether their detractors like to admit it or not. There aren’t many Giants fans outside of NY/NJ. Romo and TO could have provided enough story-fodder for the sportswriters and sportscasters. Its more of a stretch to find a good story for the Giants - other than the underdog thing I guess we’ll start seeing the “can a little brother prove himself?” angle.

I think Giants - Pats will have some draw because of the Week 17 game. That was the highest rated regular season game in the last decade, for a game that had zero playoff implications for both teams. Both teams came to play, played hard, and it was a close, hard fought game.

I hate that crap. Why should I as a sports fan, give a damn about the TV ratings? The NBA Finals ratings (Cleveland/San Antonio) were down? So what? Put that nonsense about the ratings in small print on the back of the business pages.

Bingo. This year, for once, the game will be interesting not for a metric assload of goofy storylines - “JessicaSimpsonTonyRomoOMGTheTropicsCanPeytonWintheBigOneFavreFavreFavreFavreFavre” - but because the most recent available evidence suggests that the actual football game might be entertaining.

Huh? The NFL season ended a week and a half back. There haven’t been any Super Bowls played since '92, '93 and '95.

The Superbowl is annoying.

Greenberg was on the radio the other day saying “the NFL season is like the old showbiz adage, ‘leave em wanting more’”.

You can’t say that about hoops or baseball.

But, the Superbowl is the one aspect of the NFL where you are not left wanting more. You just want the game played.

The OP is probably my second absolute favorite sour grapes line of all time. The first would have to be “well I hope they’re happy, now the ratings will suck.”

I simply don’t know if this is true or not - but since the G-men haven’t been top-tier for a while, I can imagine that their fan base has lapsed.

One thought: If the media can link this Super Bowl match up to the Yankees/Sawx-based rivalry between NY and Boston, it could get traction and attention…

Believe it or not, there are a lot of Giants fans in New England. They were in existence before the Pats, and a lot of them are still around.

The Giants supposedly have the NFL’s largest fanbase.

I don’t know if this is the NFL’s dream. I think they’re happy with either the Packers or the Giants in the Super Bowl. The Patriots, however, were an essential staple (to the NFL).
