How bad was that first job?!?

Textbook manager of a college bookstore. Got fired because the owner didn’t think I respected him. Honestly, I had a great deal of respect for him and did a terrific job. Hired someone to do the same job for a lot less pay.

The hours and the bitching and moaning from students who thought book prices were a rip-off took a lot out of me.

Now I have a great goverment job with time to allow me to post here!

Honestly, I had a great deal of respect for him and did a terrific job; he just thought he was paying me too much money. He hired someone to do the same job for a lot less pay. With that said, I harbor no resentment towards him.

The hours and the bitching and moaning from students who thought book prices were a rip-off took a lot out of me. Also had my life threatened more than once on the phone and the store had been vandalized.

Now I have a great goverment job with time to allow me to post here!

Do you have to wait for severance pay to run out before applying for unemployment? When I was unemployed in October, I didn’t. There was a mandatory one week waiting period for NY State, but my severance had nothing to do with when I collected after that. Check into it and apply now for your benefits because it can take 5-6 weeks to even see the first check.

Won’t unemployment help you out with your payments at least?

and when I say unemployment, I mean unemployment insurance or whatever the gvt gives you for instances like this.

I’m still techically employed for the next few weeks, I will be getting a paycheck, just not going in to work. So since Im not unemployed yet, I can tcollect unemployment…As far as I know anyway.

Yeah, it will help. I certainly will take it.

bdgr… sorry to hear about you bad luck.
Call your mortgage company, they may lower your payment for six months or so. or they may give you an extension ( say take three months off now and add them on in the end. Many credit cards will do this as well. My hubby was laid off last year, and I think that is one of the things that helped us out. Our car loan was through our bank, they also gave us a three month extension. We made up a lot of it when we got our income tax return. It isn’t always easy to do, but given the options, I would rather call and explain the situation I am in before it gets out of control.

Good Luck,
misstee

Just adding my sympathies and another upside–you can post more.

My brother was in IT and he got canned.

He put himself out on Monster.com and had four offers in one day.
Turns out he had unique experience with some software and his experience was in high demand. He makes twice what he did when he got the ax.

Look on the bright side and keep searching, someone with your talent and personality should not be out of work too long.

Like MISSTEE said, make arrangements now before things go south for you. It`ll help to prevent them from going south.

Look for credit cards with very low or zero interest on balance transfers (usually for 6 months or so) for the time being.

Good luck!

Well, its now been a month…Nothing to even apply for today. Damn

Dear bdgr,

Need you say more?

Your resumé is as good as written.

Remember the benevolent words of, Spiderwoman

“Chris writes a kick@ss resumé”

Or something like that …

bdge: My best friend was unemployed for 15 months after 9/11. He applied for unemployment (you should apply now even if you’re still getting paid, b/c they are notoriously slow), but he also was able to get unemployment to pay for retraining. He got a degree in massage therapy, totally gratis, and recently got a job. Now he can do massage on the side, on weekends, etc., until that turns into a real business.

When you go to the unemployment office, look for programs like these. They may pay for you to get a degree or some sort of training that you’ve always wanted to get but never had time to pursue.

Best of luck to you!

Wow. Sorry I didn’t see this earlier. Unfortunately we don’t have NTs here that I know of. I’ll ask Monday.

I have a long-ass list of job sites if you’d like to get a copy - some specific to this area, some to IT, some to industries I was interested in and some good general sites. Excel or text format.

Thanks brother. did you get the word file I sent?

I could use the list…Thanks Excel would work.

bdgr did you file for unemployment yet?

(Former Tech Support guy w/ MCSE who noe works for NJ Unemployment)

You know with the amout of former tech people here who are layed off we could start a nice consulting firm and handle people all over the US

You can still file for unemployment now, then it will kick in when your checks stop. If you wait until your checks are done there will be a lapse and I’m sure you don’t want that. Also, contact your credit card companies ASAP. They’re a lot nicer than they used to be! Best of luck to you!!

yeah, I filed. They even have it set up where you can file online…no more waiting in line.

My credit card companys stopped speaking with me a long time ago…when I was out for back surgery and they refused to work with me. My main concerns now are keeping my mortgage paid , my power on, and food on the table, and my kids medication paid for. Everything else takes a back seat. Things are still ok, but its not looking so good for about two months from now. The average unemployment is eight months, last I heard.
