My father-in-law, who I care for deeply, was just diagnosed with stage IV cancer (squamous cell in his kidney) and probably has 6 months to live. You never know, he may dodge it, but he’s got heart problems already so I’m not optimistic.
My sister was robbed at gunpoint on Christmas Eve by a young man who threatened to murder her. Marched her up to her apartment, gun to her head. Fortunately when her fiance opened the door, their 80 lb dog came charging out and the thief ran. Only cost them $1000 in deductibles.
I’m just getting over scarlet fever. Scarlet fricking fever, sounds like something from a Louisa May Alcott novel. I’ve been sick as a dog, stupid doctor didn’t diagnose me when I first went in, I wound up in the ER and couldn’t even walk my knees were so swollen. Thank Og for antibiotics.
But now this evening I just learned that a registered sex offender has moved into the house next door to ours. It’s a rental property, has been empty for months & months.
We have 6-yr-old kids. Who used to be able to enjoy their back yard.
It all seems to arrive in batches, doesn’t it? People always tell me to find the good, see the positive, and not to let it all break me down when things are like this. I wish it was easy to do.

Not to make light of anything, but you should find out the exact circumstances of what this guy was convicted of. For all anyone knows, it could’ve been for urinating in public.
Another vote for “sex offender” not = child molestor or even pedophile. At current rate, I expect to hear of kids being labeled as sex offender for playing doctor. We already have 13-yr olds charged with child pr0n for sending each other nude pics - of themselves. Somebody is unclear on concept…

It sounds like your sister got away from the attempted mugging scott free, how did it cost her $1000 in deductibles? I guess I’m just dense and tired, and missing some details. At least she made it through with her health.
The sex offender is the least of your worries. I have six living within a half mile of me. I looked them up online, all but one was convicted of Sodomy in the 90’s, no recidivism. Not underage sodomy or rape, just plain ol’ buggery. The last one was for being a chronic indecent exposure addict, I believe, and it was in 2001 or so. Yea and don’t buy a gun just to show your new neighbor.

IC 35-42-4-8…
Sec. 8. (a) A person who, with intent to arouse or satisfy the person’s own sexual desires or the sexual desires of another person, touches another person when that person is:
(1) compelled to submit to the touching by force or the imminent threat of force; or
(2) so mentally disabled or deficient that consent to the touching cannot be given;
commits sexual battery, a Class D felony.
(b) An offense described in subsection (a) is a Class C felony if:
(1) it is committed by using or threatening the use of deadly force;
(2) it is committed while armed with a deadly weapon; or
(3) the commission of the offense is facilitated by furnishing the victim, without the victim’s knowledge, with a drug (as defined in IC 16-42-19-2(1)) or a controlled substance (as defined in IC 35-48-1-9) or knowing that the victim was furnished with the drug or controlled substance without the victim’s knowledge."
He was convicted in 2004 (at the age of 43) and only served 6 months, but is on lifetime notification. I’m wondering if he’s a career criminal.
My father-in-law is only 66 yrs old.
The $1,000 in deductibles was for re-keying their car, since the crooks got away with her purse, keys and identification.

The thing about the neighborhood just blows my mind, we LOVE living here. It’s an old cluster of homes, very quiet, unfashionable. Professors and postal workers and artists living back here.
