We're having a baby!

Ok, technically, the mourning doves that built a nest outside my bedroom window are having a baby…

A few weeks ago, I started hearing a different call in the morning cacophony outside the bedroom windows. Didn’t think a lot of it until last week, when I spotted the beginnings of a nest in the top of our pergola, which is directly under my bedroom window.

Last Friday, I saw one of the pair in the nest, later that day, I spotted the egg. Everything I’ve read says there are usually two, we only have the one. My two male cats sit in that window constantly and have become captivated. Yesterday, I found some sound files of the mourning dove calls and when I played them, one of the cats came running from the living room, ran to the window in the family room UNDER the nest and started looking up. Pretty cool.

I’ll update when needed.

Fun!

A medical office we used to go to frequently had a pigeon nest on the windowsill - he’d had the window open one day, and lifted the screen for whatever reason; when he closed the window he left the screen up… and a pigeon found that just enough space for a nest. When we were there, we could watch the birdlings develop. Mama pigeon did NOT like us touching the window - she responded with a sharp RAP on the glass to tell us to keep away.

BTW - I can’t be the only one who thought “may with a cat” + “we’re having a baby” and went EWWWW ;).
