I’m sure we’ll hear plenty of jokes about Bush, just like we heard about his dad, President Reagan, and Bob Dole. Those were jokes that I laughed at. Why? Because they were funny. As a Republican, I found the Clinton jokes funny, and will find the Bush jokes just as amusing. Sorry if I don’t take jokes against my candidates personally like you seem to, and I’m sorry your post didn’t have the effect you wanted.
The reason my grandparents immigrated from Germany was due to their belief that no matter how hard they tried, they would never overcome their birthright. If you are born poor, you will always be poor - that was their situation, and they came here to challenge that.
But how is our society any different? We nominate yukheads with a MBA into the highest office, while children who could be smart, who could change the world, never learn how to read because Bush closed their public school and only the wealthier students can afford private school.
Bush did not personally execute those prisoners. As a Texan, let me fill you in on Texas law. The Governer has no power in case of an execution, except to grant a 30 day stay. He has done this in cases where DNA evidence could have proven innocence. Any other cases have to brought before him by the Texas legislature. This has been done only once, per my knowledge. The legislature brought a case to his attention and asked him to review it. They requested that the man’s sentence be reduced to life in prison. Governer Bush approved the request, and there was no execution. I just thought you’d like to know that before you make any more uniformed decisions.
“and also supported my father’s drinking habit”
Sounds like there was more than one issue here. I do hope he got better and I don’t wish to make light of the situation, but I hate to think that my parent’s(I probably wasn’t paying taxes at the time) tax dollars were going to help somebody’s drinking habit.
Some of my tax dollars go to scholarship funds. I am in full support of these scholarships that help people without the money to go to college get an education. I have never met anyone, personally, who did everything they could to get a scholarship and failed. Anybody can go to college if they know where to go for the money. Information on where to get the money can be found at any local library for free.
Your cycle of poverty argument didn’t do anything for me. I still thing the cycle can be broken, because I’ve seen it.
And, yes, this country was built on hard work. It was built by people who had a vision for a better future and put everything they had into creating that future. I have the utmost respect for them.
So, the minority student who failed first grade, who never learned to read properly and whose parents are drug addicts, will flawlessly slip into the private school system? All it takes is a little voucher!
And leaving that minority student who can’t read in the public school system that failed to teach him/her in the first place is a better idea??
Maybe the choices provided by vouchers would enable this child to find a school that CAN teach him/her to read. And even parents with drug problems, for the most part, care about their kids. Vouchers aren’t given out in a vacuum. There’s counseling available to help these parents choose the right school for their child. And maybe getting that child into a better school environment will allow him/her to overcome his/her home envronment enough to break the cycle.
It’s got to be better than never giving them the chance!
Do you think that having control of the White House and both houses of Congress automatically guarantees that the Republicans will pass any bill they want? Don’t count on it. The majorities are pretty thin in both chambers, and there’s enough mavericks there that someone will surely vote against the party line, or miss a vote, or abstain now and then. And I for one am glad that they achieve gridlock. It keeps them fighting themselves and out of my hair.
About the Supreme Court; yes, 4 seats may have to be filled in the next four years. I’ll bet my flowcharting template, though, that they won’t all need filling in the first 2 years. That gives you democrats time to change the balance of power at the 2002 elections. Hmm, maybe I shouldn’t give you ideas…
Aglarond was right - we’re not teetering on the abyss, ready to plunge into the Dark Ages here, folks.
Hmm, we get “Republicans did this, Republicans did that…” and blame them for everything, they are only for the rich with tax cuts…
Does that make the democrats the Warmongering party? We joined WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam under Democratic presidencies. Vietnam lasted thru 2 democrats, until a republican got us out.
Momcat - look at the reverse of a new penny. You can just barely see an image of his statue in the monument…
Yeah, I know. It’s just a rather feeble joke that usually elicits a smile from the listener.
I really did used to be quite poor. We ate beans most nights (cooked fresh from dried, cheaper than canned) and I used to make all my own bread because a 25lb. bag of flour and some yeast was cheaper than the Wonder bread from the day-old store. I just get kinda excited when it’s assumed that I’ve always made this much money.
Most of the Democrates class warfare posturing leaves out the fact that the rich and the poor are the same people, just at different points in their lives.
Interesting point about war, though. Think the Republicans will ever use it against them?? The Democrats use useless statistics against the Republicans often enough!!
