That is right on the money. I hate exercise because it hurts. Not the normal muscle stress kind of aches and pains. Joint and back pain are my big problems. Plus, I live in a cold climate, so all of the exercise options are indoors and incredibly boring. So, more often than not, exercise hurts and since I’m bored for most of the exercise, I can’t help but fixate on just how much I want it to be over. I think getting him to exercise will be easier if you can avoid a situation like that. Exercising with him will help because talking to you will focus his attention on the company and not the discomfort. I wish I had an exercise buddy who would motivate me to go on hikes and stuff…but they’d almost have to come get me and act as cheerleader too. I really, really hate exercise.
My sister’s weight peaked at 389 pounds. When she decided to start working out, she was fortunate because she works for a physical therapy office. They have a swimming pool! She had to order a special swimsuit online and then take it to a seamstress for alterations so it would fit. She’d wait until everyone left the office for the day and then she’d go to the pool and swim laps for as long as she could. In a few months, she was able to swim a couple of miles and even beat her gymnast daughter in a “race” once. (I’m so proud of her. Did I mention that?)
Anyway, swimming is low-impact. Your local YMCA may have a pool. Some gyms and fitness centers have a pool.
My advice is still: try everything once (as much as you can do without pain) until you find something that you don’t really, really hate. Yoga is also low impact and is a very good way to start slow & easy if you’re really, really out of shape. Also, you can wear big yoga pants and big shirts, unlike swimming where you have to expose a lot of your body in public. I completely get why some people may be uncomfortable with that.
Swimming can also be very expensive. I took a 10 week aquacise course which cost $100. For the winter I’ve moved into the cardio machine area, but that’s $50 a month. When you don’t want to exercise in the first place, the cost can make you reluctant.
To Retrograde Wandering Stars - I wish I had an exercise buddy too. My work friends are all into me changing my lifestyle and hitting the gym, but they never want to do activities with me, and now they’re moan about how they never go to the gym anymore. They both weigh 70+ pounds less than me.
It’s stupid, but I’m kinda okay with going on the cardio machines now because I go to a place with individuals TVs on the machines. I don’t have cable at home, so going to the gym while something I want to watch is on at least gets me through the workout!
FTR, I started changing my lifestyle in September and I’m down 15 pounds. It isn’t a lot, but my goal was also managing my blood sugar, not losing weight, so it’s okay. It’s hilarious, every time I go to the grocery store it’s like a whole new world. I used to stick to the frozen foods and snack foods aisles, now they’re no-mans land. It’s all about the produce aisle!
I keep reading it as sedated.
