Sounds like a fine idea to me NAF118. I do not 100% know the conversion from GMT ( I only know North American time zones, sorry)
But that only works if I know when you posted that.
The time on your post says 6:03 pm. Right now it’s 4:27 pm my time. (EDT)
So, um… that’s 2.5 hrs less than two days, meaning Friday at 3:33 pm (maybe) YOUR time…but I still have no idea what it means in EDT.
Whereas if you’d said Friday at whatever GST, all I have to do is add 4 hours and bingo.
If you don’t want to do that, can you tell me what YOUR offset is (+7, maybe?) Then I can sub yours and add mine.
You can configure what time zone the board displays its date-time stamps in. Set it to your time zone, and the math becomes simple.
User CP -> Edit Options -> Date & Time Options -> Time Zone
EDT is 3 hours ahead of NAF
Central is 2 hours
Mountain is 1
He is in Pacific
GMT is -8 hours
Whoa! It’s like magic!
Thank you, Pleonast.
And I withdraw my objections to the ‘time left til deadline’ way of announcing.
Wait, does not everybody have the boards set up to time stamp in their own timezone?
That would make everything make SO much more sense. Go set up the boards to timestamp in your own timezone people!
How can you stand for the timestamp to not be accurate? It would drive me right up the wall!
You look at the timestamps?
Not always, but they are something that is in my field of vision, so I notice them.
But I have a thing about time. I am the type who will adjust my watch if it gets to be even 30 seconds off.
Don’t ever try and use my computer, then. The CMOS battery is dying so it the clock loses 15 minutes every 2 weeks or so.
Yeah, that would drive me nuts.
The stupid thing is supposed to be running NTP which would fix the problem, but the daemon refuses to start up properly. Oh well.
So, now that I’ve had a couple drinks, does anybody want to hear the story about how the railroad industry directly influenced standardized time zones in the US?
Buy me a drink and I’ll (pretend) to listen to anything.
Barkeep! One of whatever SBS is having, on me.
Well, you see, back when the railroad industry was helping the US to expand westward, noon was still set by when the sun was overhead at a given local. This lead to confusion, as train arival and departure times were based on their respective stations. Just imagine if local times were different by say, 8 minutes, 27 minutes, and 94 minutes on the two legs of a trip. This didn’t sit well with the engineers, who had to do calculations to figure out what the hell time it was where they were at. It didn’t set well with the customers, who were not happy when the train wasn’t there when it said it would be. It didn’t set well with management, who were losing money because of it. So, standardized time zones were developed. Sure, there was a bell curve of people who’s watch read noon when the sun was actually plus or minus 30 minutes from overhead. But it sure made the railroad schedule easier!
That’s nothing man. It was the aliens hic that invented zulu time. Who else would need the same time at every place on the planet? The aliens… they’re up there right now… plotting an attack!
Aliens man… ALIENS!
::falls off barstoll. passes out on the floor::
Whoa.
Looks like I missed some plenty interesting fireworks. MTS…cheers.
I need a big friggin’ drink.
Bartender, I need rum. And leave the bottle.
Tsk. So sad when a man can’t carry his liquor. ::smiles slowly at Pygmy Rugger:: So, tell me more about railroads. All that power, all that hot steam…
Barkeep! Two more rounds over here, if you would so kindly.
Well, you see, the Watt steam engine was wood or coal fired, used alot of fuel, and alot of water. After the internal combustion engine was perfected by Dr. Diesel, pretty much all steam locomotives were taken out of commission. Except, of course, for certain promotional or marketing applications.
But if you wanna talk about power, I just bought an '06 Dodge Charger Daytona, with an estimated 360 ponies coming from a 5.7 Hemi.
Barkeep! Set up a round for my friends and a round for myself as well…
(Damned driving.)
