"...West Vile Nirus..."

Did anyone else hear Carl Kasell this morning (Wednesday, August 7th, 2002) on the NPR 8:00am news blurb?

The leadoff story was about West Nile Virus in the U.S., and the most recent case being detected in Missouri (Illinois?).

I could have sworn Carl opened with “The most recent case of West Vile Nirus was detected…”

Did anyone else hear this, or was I making it up?

Pretty appropriate. I doubt if Bertha is helping Lousiana’s cause now, or Texas’ for that matter.

Situated along the muggy Gulf Coast, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bite the bullet and get one of the fancy schmancy carbon dioxide mosquito traps. They’re pricey but they work and they sure as heck beat the alternative of constantly covering yourself with Deet, a carcinogen, or constantly staying inside.

All reports agree that this crap is here to stay.

I heard the story through sleep-riddled ears. [my alarm goes off to the radio, and it was 6 a.m.] I didn’t hear him say that, so I don’t know if it was another hour’s story or not.

Or I just could have been fuzzy enough to not notice it.

Yeah, I heard it. I was just getting ready to head out for a set of tennis (makes me sound real upper class doesn’t it?) and I heard the dean of radio news announcers let that spoonerism out (it was 6 a.m here when I heard it). I stopped and said, “Did he really say that? Carl Kassel doesn’t make mistakes like that.” Then I replayed it in my head and I said, “Yep, he really said that.”

I’m looking forward to the NPR quiz show, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me! this weekend. I imagine the panel members will rib him about it. I also imagine that someone will have already sent NPR a ribbing note about it and it will appear on the “letters” section tomorrow (or is it Friday?).

I had to read that six time to figure out what was wrong with it…

Times. Six times. Sheesh.
