We've lost a great jazz musician. RIP, Mulgrew Miller

I’m very sorry to report that Mulgrew Miller has succumbed to the stroke that he suffered last week.

I first heard him on the outstanding Tony Williams trio album, ‘Young at Heart’. Title track here.
Or, here he is solo, playing ‘I Love You’.

All I can say is thank you for the inspiration of your beautiful music, Mr. Miller.

Premature reports of his death started circulating among my jazz musician friends on Facebook yesterday; sad news, indeed, to have them confirmed today.

I hadn’t heard of Mr. Mulgrew before. Now that I’ve been introduced to his music, I’m sorry to hear of his death.

His playing is strong. Very direct, very fluid. But he’s a got a light rhythmic touch and definitely understood dynamics well. Extremely enjoyable to listen to.

Thanks for the introduction, Le Ministre.

RIP, Mr. Mulgrew.

Aw hell. Terrible sad news. Selfishly, he was a guy I envisioned carrying the straight-ahead torch for years to come, also known as the guy I would look forward to seeing when all the generation before him have gone. Never did get to see him. Great great player.

Well stated - I’m in this camp as well. I appreciate the introduction.

Very sad. I’ve always liked his playing. When I hosted a jazz radio show, if I was pressed for time and unprepared, I knew I could grab a recording with him on it and play it without previewing, and it would be good.
