It’s time to graduate from film school- which means I can’t use their equiptment anymore! It’s time to buy my own “pro-sumer” grade camera.
In school, I’ve been using Cannon GL1’s and Sony XL1’s (and playing with PD150s-which I’m not a fan of), so mostly I’ve been looking at GL2’s and XL1S’s. I liked the GL1- it was a good sturdy little camera. But I loved the XL1’s image and the control I could get over it.
From what I hear the GL2’s are really amazing- and a good thousand bucks cheaper. I’m thinking the main advantage with the XL1S is that with interchangable lenses, it’d hopefully be a camera that will grow on me and my cinamatographer buddy is a fan of prime lenses- but I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to buy more lenses for it before the camera gets outdated.
Then comes along this Panasonic DVX100, which I know nothing about! It’s big draw is 24fps. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I’m a big proponant of digital, and I can’t wait until technology and aesthetics change to the point that everyone wants to look at digital images- not images made on what I consider to be an archaic medium.
But damn film looks good. And I want my movies to look good. And apparently most people thing the images that come out of a DVX100 look good. But in my mind, the XL1 is still the standard for a decent three chip camera. I’m reluctent to give up what I consider to be a good solid thing.
What would you do?
