By entertainment, I mean media viewed at home (not season tickets to live events, things like that). I don’t have cable and use various internet sites to get my entertainment. But as of now, I’m signed up for about 5 different services.
Netflix
Hulu Plus
Amazon prime (I got this for shipping, but the movies are a nice addition)
Spotify
MoviePass
Some of these I am the only subscriber, some I share subscriptions. But the costs are starting to add up. I still think they’re worth it though. But I do wonder if we are just recreating cable by a different name by expecting everyone to have 3-6 different paid video streaming services.
I only have Netflix’s DVD service. Yeah, I’m a Luddite.
I actually tried Netflix streaming—my friend gave me her login info and I spent an afternoon checking out what they had. Honestly, they didn’t have much that I was interested in. I’m not real big on TV and my movie tastes seem to run to older productions. As near as I can tell Netflix is useful for people with small kids or who like to bingewatch television dramas and sitcoms. That’s not me I’m afraid.
That said I’m thinking of getting Amazon Prime this fall. I had it up until this past spring and found it mildly useful. It might be worth it to get another year’s subscription just for The Grand Tour and the occasional B comedy.
I’d love to get satellite or cable, but being as I’m not a big fan of television shows I’d likely spend my TV time watching PBS and HBO. Neither of those justify the expense (I’m also a cheapskate).
