Wow, turns out it* is* important to call things for what they really are. The crazy right was right about that it seems.
For those interested in a little reading on the subject.
Most relevant exerpt: “Osama bin Laden himself said that Obama’s refusal to join the language fight made it more difficult to generate recruits.”
By the way, the phrase, “The jig is up” is seen by many as racially offensive.
All of Trump’s speeches sound like he is still running for President. This one was no different.
Haven’t you heard, PC is dead. Racist language is cool again. Welcome to the newly Great America.
I haven’t been paying enough attention to know what time of day the inauguration was scheduled to take place, but I read the OP and honestly suspected it had been posted proactively, before said speech had actually been given.
I was sure the title of this post was sarcastic, but then I saw who the OP was.
God, what a grim affair. Dampened crowd enthusiasm, Trump telling everyone what dire straights their country is in and how it’s a fucking cesspool that’s beaten by everyone, even a gloomy rainy day. It looked like a funeral.
When he said he wrote his own speech I thought he was bullshitting and he’d get a good writer to come up with something, but no, that sounded like him. Divisive, talking about what a piece of shit America is and how he’s going to salvage it, not even using euphemisms for things like “protection”
I figured as a showman he’d at least make a half watchable inauguration, but that was a huge pile of shit. And then we got a bunch of religious bullshit so all the evangelicals who voted for the least Christ-like president we’ve ever seen can pat themselves on the back about how godly he is.

Says who? And define “many”. :dubious:
Germany first! Germans buy from Germans! We will build Autobahns!
Yeah, sure, but not totally outdated shit like that. “Jig” as in short for “jig-a-boo”? Who has heard anybody say that? We’re not gonna have to exaggerate anything, not gonna have to make shit up. He’ll do all that stuff for us.
Today is the high point of his admin.
Hush now with yer fancy logic, thoughtfulness and facts.
You now have a leader that doesn’t need any of that nonsense. No more PC nuances that may involve a second of thought. Nope now you can just sit back and bask in the straightforward joy of being lied to directly and with ease while the powerful continue to enrich each other and try very hard to remove as many protections normal people have against the powerful.
Ya-fucking-hoo.
I’m sure any minute Trump will pivot to the general.
Wait, what? :smack:
Technically, he did get the title of the thread correct.
Trump was out and standing when he spoke.
Phenomenal. I especially liked the parts where Trump shook his mane of naturally curly brown hair; bared his arms to display his ripped anatomy and gigantic, bulging biceps; belted out the National Anthem in a perfect, heartbreaking baritone; recited “Song of Myself” from memory, and departed by hopping into a flying saucer (which, by the way, he built and pilots himself).
Man, it is liberating, being untethered from reality! Now I see why some of you guys like it so much.
“The lamps are going out all over [America], we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”
Compare and contrast with Dan Rather’s opinion of the speech.
(It’s a Facebook post, so I don’t know if that works if you’re not a FBer)
Agree, it was as poor a piece of oration from a world leader that I’ve heard in some time. It had more than a whiff of the fascist about it as well, if you really are giving the government back to the people you don’t have to make such a song and dance about it and if you bitch about insiders and vested interests whilst filling your cabinet with exactly that…well it doesn’t bode well.
Still I’m foreign, so according to Trump my opinion doesn’t matter anymore and I’m probably just waiting to steal your jobs or something.
I think that was among the most disappointing political speeches I’ve ever heard, if one excludes things like Admiral Stockdale’s confusing and off-putting comments in that debate.
Reagan gave very good speeches despite my differences with him. GWB, despite often stumbling on words, produced speeches that had nice touches.
This was a meandering mess that was quite repetitive, extremely pessimistic, totally unrealistic, had no sense of pace or meter, had the tone of a stand-up comedian trying to be serious, and I don’t think had any memorable lines.
In fact, I think it stands in contrast to his victory speech for Election Day, which was notable for being quite gracious and optimistic.
What was your favorite line, and why?
