I’m guessing that’s a microphone. The thing coming off the headband isn’t connected to Kermit. It looks like a microphone with green foam over it.
My guess, it’s for a microphone so he can do the voice at the same time.
I think you are confusing Henson’s mike cord for something attached to Kermit. It looks like it has a green cover over it, making it blend into Kermit.
I don’t think the wires connect him with Kermit - it looks like his wireless headset mike and antenna.

But yeah, this is the age of wired everything. All the cables will be for his microphone and what looks like might be headphones, possibly for music playback or a click track.
My wife and I recently saw the excellent Being Elmo and the puppeteers often had both mics and small TVs on their headsets, so they could see the image of their character.
Its not easy being green when you got Jims hand up your butt all the time.
