What are computer drawing tablets like these days?

I used to draw a lot, and I used to be a pretty good artist- pencil, charcoal and pen to paper. But then I got into web design/development and for years all of my image creation/manipulation was done with Bézier curves and straight lines in Adobe Illustrator, or various drawing tools in Photoshop. Mostly using a trackball mouse as an input device.

I do have a very old Intuos drawing tablet, just a small 3 x 5" input area device, but I never got really comfortable with using it. For one thing, there was no friction that pencil or pen to paper affords, so it just felt too “slippery”. Maybe that’s just a matter of getting used to it. Another thing, when I would draw on paper I’d sketch rough outlines very lightly, then go over the lines with more pressure to darken them up. My old Intuos has pressure levels, but the pressure goes from very fine to very wide quickly, more like a paintbrush than a pencil. That may be a matter of adjusting settings, but it just feels like it’s not fine-grained and subtle enough.

So for those of you who use drawing tablets these days, what are they like now-- is the “feel” and response more natural? What types/brands would you recommend? Thanks!
