What are "rustic meats"?

Just got a mailer from Papa John’s Pizza advertising “Rustic Meats” Pizza.

Huh?

The somewhat disappointing answer is

What makes prefabricated pepperoni and factory extruded sausage “rustic” is anyone’s guess. Maybe their meat plant is in a particularly bucolic part of Mongolia or something.

From their website. I don’t think I can link you directly, because I had to start a bogus order to see their detailed menu.

ETA: Darn you, Tapioca!

I’ve lived in Italy. I’ve eaten some pretty rustic meats.

I don’t think Papa John’s is going to be putting horse on their pizzas anytime soon.

(Disclaimer: Italians don’t seem to put horse on their pizzas either. I generally ate that on sandwiches.)

Probably an attempt to invoke rustico, which I believe refers to Italian rural cuisine. And probably more because it sounds almost Italian than because it reflects a particular cooking style.

Consider yourself lucky they aren’t offering la cucina povera.
“Try our new bread pizza!”

My grandparents really used to eat this way - my grandfather was an Italian immigrant and my grandmother was the daughter of immigrants and kept a pretty traditional home.

Pap usually ate cheese, bread and salad for lunch, and salad and pasta for dinner. He never ate a second plate of pasta, never ate a very large piece of meat, and never turned down another glass of wine.

It called rustic because the sausage and pepperoni they use on it got forgotten in the back corner of the warehouse for a looooonnnnngggg time.

Thank you, try the veal.
