What are some good Wii games

I was able to score a Wii a week ago. So far it’s been ok, but with two kids it’s kind of hard to play much. Target had a huge buy 2 get 1 free deal, they were pretty much wiped out, but I was still able to pick up Tiger Woods 09, Quantum of Solace and an extra controller.

I’m really enjoying the Wii Sports, since it’s quick and easy to play. I’ve only played a bit with Tiger Woods, but 007 sucks. I think it’s because I can not stand first person shooters. I thought I would like to give it a try, but even on easy for me it’s all, look bad guy, oops I’m dead, oh look fire, oops I’m dead again. I’ve played for over an hour and didn’t get anywhere. Before I break my TV I’ve decided to not play it any more.

So I’m looking for some games. I do have a PS2, though the only things I’ve played on that in the last 2+ years is Guitar Hero and Lego Indiana Jones. I also tried God of War and hated it. The last game I enjoyed was the first Prince of Persia. I don’t much like games where it’s run, beat up a bunch of people, run, beat up more people, repeat. PoP came close to that, but had other stuff that made it worth it.

I really enjoy puzzle type games, I loved Lemmings when it first came out. I’ve seen ads for World of Goo and was thinking of picking that up. Other then that I haven’t seen, or know much about good games. It seems every time I pick up a game people love, God of War, it’s just too boring for me. FPS just seem to have way too much fighting and no puzzle solving at all. I also like to keep my jumping from one pixel to the next pixel or die to a minimum.

Also didn’t we have a thread with other people’s Wii numbers? I’m not sure how to find it since Wii is too short to search on.

Okay first up for you is the Prince of Persia game on the Wii (The Two Thrones). It’s actually a port of the third in the new PoP series. It does have quite a bit of fighting mixed in with the platforming.

World of Goo is interesting but very short. I finished in just a few hours and only got stuck once due to a poorly designed level where what to do was obvious but it just didn’t work if you did certain ways.

I would recommend Zack and Wiki because it is a modern descendant of the point and click adventure. It sounds like it would be right up your alley.

Finally with two children to play with I would recommend Super Smash Brothers Brawl. It’s a platform fighting game featuring characters from a whole lot of games and it is simple to play with plenty of depth.

Hey, if you’re not using it, I’ll take it off your hands :D.

Ok, but really, the most fun I’ve had on Wii by myself is Mario Galaxy and the library of NES and SNES on the Virtual Console.

The most fun I’ve had with others has been Wii Sports and Mario Kart.

For puzzlers . . . hmmm, Metroid is kind of a puzzler, but it’s got a really dark feel to it, and there’s some run and shoot, run and shoot involved. I think Pikmin is coming to the Wii at some point (Justin Bailey can confirm or deny this; I haven’t been keeping up.)

a remake of the original Pikmin is coming to the Wii.

Also it should be noted that, while a bit of a puzzler, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is technically an FPS, though I would hasten to point out it bares little similarity to a Halo or Call of Duty game.
to the OP: I’d agree that Zak and Wiki sounds right up your alley. Also I got a kick out of Kororinpa, which is a short but cheap marble game, basically you move a marble through a bunch of crazy mazes. I really loved the Monkey Ball games for the Gamecube and I feel this was a lot like them (Monkey Ball on the Wii was terrible, though. I hated it). Also if you like Mario games than get Galaxy. I thought it was great, personally

For the kids I’d definitely go with Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Mario Kart

Definitely Mario Galaxy.

I’d also reccommend World of Goo, but I’ve only played it on the PC. It’s quirky in all the right ways, but I’m not sure if it’ll have much replay value…

Pikmin is coming to the Wii, both the old ones (ported with updated targetting using the Wiimote) and a whole new Pikmin. I’m looking forward to that, too.

I haven’t played it but I’ve gotten the impression that it is not significantly different from Metroid Prime, which I own, and which is a First-Person Adventure game, not a FPS. Am I mistaken?

There’s quite a lot of shooting in Prime. You could call it an adventure game with FPS elements, or an FPS with adventure elements, and neither description would be that far off the mark. If someone absolutely cannot stand FPS at all, that’s probably going to get in the way of them enjoying any of the modern Metroid games.

you’re correct (but being nitpicky  ) It is very much in the same vein as the first two MP games. That said, you have a gun, you shoot things, and it’s first-person perspective, and so can be considered an FPS even though it is much more of an adventure game than a shooter. Hey, I’ve heard people describing Fallout 3 as an FPS, though it’s really more of a “first-person role-playing game” or an FPRPG (“oblivion with guns” comes closer but still doesn’t fit the bill). For the purposes of this discussion, though, taking the OP’s tastes in consideration, I was simply warning of the shooting aspects of the game

so ok, it isn’t “technically an FPS,” it’s “technically” an FPAG though it does “technically” have FPS aspects to it

You’re right, kinda. Normally I probably wouldn’t make the distinction, except I like very few FPSs, and I liked Prime exactly because it was more an adventure game and less a shooter.

Super Mario Galaxy is a blast. Your kids can even play “shotgun” with the second remote if they’re not proficient enough to play the normal game. Plus the game has a pick up and play feel because each star will take between 5-15 minutes to get. I can sit down, play a half hour, and feel like I’ve accomplished something. The best endorsement I can give for it is that my wife loves to play it and she almost never plays video games (SSX being the only other exception).

I also recommend Zack & Wiki though I am still stuck on the last puzzle. It is a giant level and I haven’t devoted the time to solve it. I then got distracted by other games (and life) and have not made it back to the game yet.

You need to pick up Okami if you don’t already have that for the PS2. You will thank me later. The game is beautiful, funny, deep, and long. It throws a fun new mechanic in the form of a celestial brush that your character, a god, controls. You use your Wii remote to draw lines, circles, etc. on the screen, and it affects the world (both the environment and enemies). I can’t say if it’s better or worse than on the PS2, having only played it on the Wii. For a comparison, it is similar to the Legend of Zelda series.

Speaking of which, Zelda also has a strong showing on the Wii with Twilight Princess, but it is not quite as fresh or as fun as Okami.

I don’t mind so much shooting stuff, hell who doesn’t like shooting stuff? What I don’t like is just constant shooting. The 007 game I died 3-4 times at the start of the game before I could even figure out where the hell I was. I think I played for a good two hours and got nowhere really. Very annoying to play for that long and it’s mostly just shooting.

I did like the original Tomb Raider games and as I said the Prince of Persia game.

I will have to look into some of the games, especially Zak & Wiki and Okami, which I’ve heard of.

I really like Tetris Party. It’s a WiiWare game that you can download from the Wii Shopping Channel for about $12. You can play against friends or strangers online, too.

Mario Kart Wii is awesome, too.

I would very strongly recommend Boom Blox. I think it’s quite possibly the best lite party game on the system. Basically, the game sets you up with various jenga-like towers and you try to knock them over by throwing balls at them. It’s the kind of game that anyone can pick up in minutes and have a blast. The warlords multiplayer mode is particularly great at encouraging couch diplomacy, as well.

Mario Galaxy is a no brainer. I seem to be the only one that had some trouble with the camera in the game, but it’s still a fantastic platformer.

Mario Kart and Smash Brothers Brawl are both great games and lots of fun in multiplayer.

Mega Man 9 is simply great if you liked playing Mega Man games back on the NES. Without the nostalgia factor, though, it probably is not worth it.

If you like party games that you can play with a bunch of people (think really short mini games - complete some task before time runs out or whatever, then pass off the remote to someone else), check out Raymond’s Raving Rabbids (there’s 2; I only have the first one, and it’s fun) or Wario’s Smooth Moves. We have these, and we like them a lot.

But they are short - just a warning. Infinitely replayable, I think, but short.

Another vote for Rayman’s Raving Rabbids. It’s a silly, goofy sort of fun.

I’ve got a game called Mercury Meltdown, which is similar except instead of a marble, you have to navigate a blob of mercury through various mazes.

Mario Galaxy, Excite Truck (a BLAST to play), No More Heroes.

I got World of Goo a few days ago, I’m enjoying it (I was thinking of starting a thread about it). I tend to like puzzle games too. I think it’s worth 15 bucks for the download. <rant> Wii ware only sells “Wii points” in 10 dollar increments, so it really cost me 20 bucks, and now I’m looking for something else to put my last 5 bucks/500 points toward.</rant>

I’ll second the recommendation for Boom Blox - absolutely stellar game with some creation and puzzle elements mixed in with the spot-on physics of throwing and dragging blocks. Hard to describe, but awesome fun with a group.

Zack & Wiki *is also good puzzle fun, but complicated at times despite the cartoonish look. In the same vein, Sam & Max Season 1 just recently hit the Wii, and it has the same inventory-puzzle gameplay with a more accessible sense of humor.

Finally, Super Mario Galaxy is so much platforming fun and innovation that it should practically be required for anyone who enjoys games that are 3D.

Huh. Well, I’ll have to put in a word of caution against Boom Blox - I didn’t find it all that good, actually, and it wasn’t really a hit in the way that Raving Rabbids was. It’s a very specific kind of fun, I think, which might appeal to certain kinds of gamers.

If you liked building snow forts and tossing snow balls at each other from behind the forts, you might like Boom Blox. But personally, I wouldn’t recommend it - not really fun, and not really funny.

Holy cow! Not a single mention of Mario Party 8? Great game for all ages, and LOTS of stuff to unlock.

SSBB is also a lot more game than you think, and it’s great for all ages.

Need for Speed: Carbon is the best driving game I’ve found. Lots of depth, nice learning curve, and some a bunch of mini-games for when you don’t want to get too involved.

Mario Galaxy, Boom Blox & Raving Rapids are all excellent games mentioned above.

I can second that Mercury Madness is lots of fun.

I also highly recommend the Wii Fit and get Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip. Its fun to snowboard in your living room.
