I like the convenience of my Keurig coffeemaker, although I have several other ways of making coffee, too. Everybody and his dog is into Keurig cups now. I’m a sucker for those wall-sized displays of all the Keurig brands/flavors in Bed, Bath & Beyond. Which ones do you think taste the best and make the best coffee (given the limitations of the method)?
I like really strong coffee (but not dark roast) and I usually wind up using less water to kick up the coffee-ness. I don’t particularly care for flavored coffee. I have the kind of Keurig machine (actually it’s a Mr. Coffee, as my TWO previous Keurig brand machines ceased to function after a few months of use) that you pour in one cup each time you want to brew a cup; i.e. there is no reservoir of water. One cup in-one cup out. Very simple.
So far, I think Gevalia has the consistently best flavor. I also like Timothy’s. I tried Bob Marley coffee thinking it would be bold and brash, but it was weak even when I used less water than recommended. Anyhoo, forget what I like; what do YOU like?
I also like strong coffee but not dark roast. I use 8 O’Clock Columbian; to me it’s strong enough and very consistent. I used to use Trader Joe’s and grind the beans when making the coffee which made wonderful coffee but took energy. Now I am lazy. To me the 8 O’Clock Columbian is perfectly acceptable.
Not a huge fan of those (and I’m a coffee hound, which partially explains it.) It’s like some suit sat down and thought, “How can we squeeze out as much profit as possible from a coffee maker?”
I don’t have one; I use a traditional coffee maker. But I was housesitting for my sister for a week, and that was all she had, so I lumped it. I had brought my favorite coffee, a Hawaiian macadamia nut blend, and used the little reusable grounds cup instead. Even doing that, it used more grounds than I normally would overall.
I figure if I really want something different, I can go hit up Starbucks or Peet’s. But I usually don’t.
I also like the Kauai Coffee pods. They make a good, strong coffee. As a bonus, they are a ‘pod’ without the plastic cup–so there’s less waste–but they fit in the regular keurig-style brewers.
Thanks for those suggestions! I thought this thread was a goner. I’ve had my eye on the Kauai pods, and I’ve found most Keurig cups make too weak a brew for my taste. Because I have the “pour in the water, get coffee” type, I can decrease the amount of water I use, but sometimes I get a ludicrously small cup of coffee out.
I have tried the Van Houtte’s cups and they are good.
Newman’s Own has been my go-to for a good while, but I recently tried the Kirkland brand (Costco) Pacific Bold that is much cheaper and found it made a damn fine cup of coffee.
mmm
My favorite is Stew Leonard’s New York City Roast, which I can buy at my sort-of-local grocer – it’s about 40 minutes to the nearest Stew’s. It’s strong and bitter; the opinions of others that I’ve convinced to try it seem to sharply divide into “really good” and “worst thing ever.” It’s probably not worth the mail-order price though.
My second favorite is Marley Coffee’s “Talkin’ Blues” 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain. After trying dozens of varieties, this was the first coffee that I found for our Keurig that I thought was actually good. Until then, I liked the k-cups for convenience, but I thought everything I had tried had resulted in really sub-par coffee. Unfortunately, since I first found it, it’s gone from pricey to ridiculously expensive, at over $2 per cup now.
Tasty. I just can’t abide the cost, even if it’s not prohibitive. Convenient for sure, and easy. Perfect for inveterate, confirmed bachelors and misanthropic cranks who don’t need (or want) a whole pot.
