What are the best zombie films?

I loved 28 days later and 28 weeks later. The sequel was even better than the original, in my opinion.

The difference between the is that, in the second movie, the material from the original isn’t presented as “What happened before,” but instead is incorporated directly into the narrative of the movie. It’s not entirely accurate to say that EDII is a remake of the original movie: rather, it incorporates a remake of the original movie, and then adds substantial additional information. If you see the second movie, there’s really no reason to go back and watch the first one.

I’m just after watching Planet Terror… I’m not sure if it’s a Zombie Movie, as I’m pretty sure the “zombies” aren’t dead, simply infected. Right? Does the film actually state that these guys are dead? I guess that means the infected in 28 Days/ Weeks Later aren’t really zombies either. I’m splitting hairs. Sorry.

Anyways, Planet terror is just about ok, but it has, for a fairly light-hearted over-the-top comedy/ horror, some seriously nasty, nasty scenes, just really pointlessly cruel. It really pulls you out of the exploding-heads sugar buzz that the movie induces.

Don’t feel too bad. It’s a discussion that rages on pretty much every Zombie forum I’ve seen. Purists insist that 28 Days Later is not a Zombie Movie.

This is all well and true, but the fact remains that Raimi and company originally planned to use footage from ED1 as “What happened before.” It was only when they ran into problems with the rights that the “let’s tell the story of ED1 in seven minutes!” idea was hatched.

OK, I watched it. I found it different than other zombie flicks I’ve seen in that it wasn’t nearly as gory and depended more on suspense. I usually think horror depends too much on gore but in this case I needed more.

As flicks go, it was good. There were a few things I wasn’t really clear on. One part of it (the guy in the courtyard) seemed to have been lifted, in a way, from Day of the Dead. Another part, which I can’t think of a cryptic way to describe and won’t “spoil” here, made logical sense to me and should probably have been in other zombie flicks. Special effects and such were good overall.

I didn’t buy the ending, though…the disc had three, btw. Overall I give it a 6.

I was trying to think of more zombie flicks but every time I thought of something, I realized that it was actually a vampire movie.

Well, four endings, if you count the radically different storyboarded one that the producers themselves said didn’t make any sense at all. I just had an irrational urge to take that movie, and make a little film with the altenrate endings with the “This is how it REALLY happened!” title cards from Clue placed between them.

The real ending of 28 Days Later had the infected starting to fall or drop dead, and a bit of hope with Jim, the girl, and the kid living safely in a house, on the verge of being rescued or waiting it all out, right? I was actually pretty surprised to see such a hopeful, happy ending.

Of course, I have yet to see 28 Weeks Later.
