What are the boxes marked "i" in Google Earth?

It seems fairly recent. At least, I don’t remember seeing them two, three months ago. Several areas are overlain with boxes that have a large “i” in them. They interfere with the view that’s there. If I close in and click on one, I get some gobbledygook info that I don’t understand, and presents me with an option for a “preview,” and if I select that, I get a photo, usually somewhat cloudy, of the area. Am I stuck in some sort of beta version of something? What are these things and how can I get rid of them? Thanks, dopers. xo, C.

I’m an occasional user, not an expert on GE. I belive you can get rid of those by unchecking the GE Community box on the left side of the display.

In my experience these are all links to posts made by users in the GE community. I can’t recall exactly, but there may be sub choices available allowing visability of some items vs other items.

The folks at the GE BLOG www.gearthblog.com have all sorts of information available.

GaryM has it.

Those are all placemarks submitted in the Google Earth forums. http://bbs.keyhole.com

The layer has the same icon, the “i”. Just uncheck that layer in the “layers” box at the bottom left. You can also expand the layer and check just a sublayer if it looks interesting. “Community Showcase” displays the best user placemarks (as determined by the forum mods, I believe).
