What are the "Land of the Four Winds" and what do they mean?

I once tried to post this topic, but I can’t remember if this was ever completed so I will re-start it here. I can remember reading in several articles, mainly pertaining to ancient history, that repeatedly referred to a sacred spiritua; place known as the “Land of the Four Winds”. What exactly are these “Four Winds” and in what “Land” did they originate (Asia, North America, Europe, ect.)
