I was taking my kid to a doc appointment one day when I ended up behind a guy in a pickup truck. He had all these anti-Islamic bumper stickers on his truck. Including one that said Islam is a gutter or garbage religion, something to that effect. There was also the Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes fame pissing on the word Allah. I’m not really a fan of religion but it kind of blew me away to see someone driving around with that on the back of their vehicle.
So what are the most offensive, inflammatory bumper stickers and things of that nature you’ve actually seem people driving around with on their vehicle in public?
Driving through Georgia circa 2000, a picture of the Georgia state capitol building with the confederate battle flag flying from the top, and the caption, “I have a dream.”
Any of the rabidly anti-Obama ones where he’s an evil Mooslim Commie who’s going to confiscate our guns and Bibles, make us all do drugs so we’re compliant, and seize control of Texas.
Years ago, one of the sales reps for the plastics company I worked for had a sales call to make in the Watts area of L.A. Some of the smartasses there handmade a bumper sticker for his car that said **“If I’d have known it would cause so much trouble, I’d have picked my own damn cotton”. **
L.A. cop pulled him over and told him about it as he neared the clients plant. Cop told him he might want to rethink it. Rep was mortified, to say the least.
Cops are fathers and sons and Mothers and daughters. Cops have best friends. Some people are best friends with cops. Cops have dangerous, scary jobs. Cops don’t get paid very much. And they are overworked. Cops are being portrayed as racist lackeys and thugs. I think a lot of cops and their families are feeling a lot of pressure right now.
Now, of course, using that exact phrase at this time is in very bad timing. But I think part of that reaction the police are tired of being looked at so negatively.
EDIT/ADD: I see the basic point you are making, I won’t deny it was in bad timing
The sentiment is fine, but there are a million ways to phrase it that aren’t setting it up against the “black lives matter” campaign.
This city is 50.7% black and we are a stone’s throw from Baltimore. This particular phrasing was not expressing warm fuzzies for our public servants, it was a direct “F you” to half the city.
Seriously, the other day I saw one with words to the effect of if I didn’t like their driving, I could shove it up my ass. Really aggressive and offensive.
I really wonder how some people don’t end up with their cars keyed.
