Probably a dumb question, but I usually keep a few browser tabs of different thread topics that I’m following open in Chrome. Often I’ll see a number in parenthesis that appears before the title in the tab, like this:
(1) What are the numbers that appear in the browser title tabs?
I assumed it means a new post has appeared since I last checked, but when I open the tab there’s often not a new post. But something must be getting updated. What’s that number signify?
You’ve been quoted, or maybe replied to, or have a PM. You’ve got a notification. Not related to the post you’re looking at, necessarily. You should see the same number over your user icon (the blue S at the top of the screen). If you click on that it’ll show you what you’re being notified to.
I see, thanks. As to how it appears in the various thread tabs, it seems pretty random though. For instance, when I checked this post, of the half dozen or so Chrome tabs I had open, several had no number (including this tab, the one you replied to) a couple had a (1), and one tab had a (2).
It may actually have something to do with the post you’re looking at. I may have misspoke. I just went and looked at Notification Settings and there’s some stuff in there I don’t really understand. I may have made different settings than you.
I also tend to not have threads open in browser tabs, so I guess I shouldn’t speak for how posts and replies act in open browser tabs. I usually have one tab open and it’s a list (usually New).
If you click your user logo then your user name at the top of the panel that opens, and then “Preferences” you will see the Notifications settings options.
Cool, thanks.
