On the Law & Order shows, the M.E. can always tell with certainty whether an unidentified dead woman was a prostitute or not – signs mentioned include needle tracks, STDs, rectal tearing, and hip displaysia. Is all this true? Suppose a woman were a very careful prostitute who avoided drugs and never let a trick do her without a condom – would she still have the other problems? Why “hip displaysia”? Any others? I’ve also heard, no cite, that when a woman has sex that often, the walls of her vagina toughen and thicken – is that true?
And would the same effects be observed in an idle-rich nymphomaniac who has sex as often, with as many different men, as a working girl?
Come to think of it, how often does the average prostitute have sex? Ten times a day? Twenty?
Would any of this be different for a call girl, as opposed to a streetwalker or brothel whore?
The answer might help put in perspective the plight of all those “sex slaves” the media say are imported from Eastern to Western Europe. Though I doubt their lot would be any worse than that of a nominally free woman working for a pimp in an American city.
Several other Dopers have started sex-related threads recently, got me thinking along those lines, and there is so much material and so many unanswered questions.

Repetitive stress injuries and trauma related to repeated hand/blowjobs
Back problems due to high heels/dancing/etc.
As well as other occupational hazards (assault, mugging, etc.)
I can do more thorough searching tomorrow. I have to wonder at the hip dysplasia thing as being confined to prostitutes, however. AFAIK it’s a genetic condition; I’ve had problems with my hip coming partially out of joint during sex and certainly don’t have sex on an occupational scale. I am curious about the other claims, though.

Seriously, this is a question many of us have pondered, but mainly in the form of where do they go? They just sort of disappear after a while. Most simply return to their villages upcountry. But the few who keep on into their twilight years end up in freelance joints like Thermae Coffee Shop and are not a pretty sight. A few prostitutes will save money for the future, but the vast majority act like there’s no tomorrow. They gamble all night and drink hard. That more than the act of prostitution itself takes a big toll.
It’s very interesting to watch a girl in the bar who is new to the game progress. At first, she’s very shy and retiring, doesn’t drink, still polite. After just a few months, the same girl is a big partier, sporting a tattoo or two. Some age quite well, but the living-for-today philosophy tends to take its toll. They’re almost all looking for that big score of a Westerner to take them back to the West, although most of the marriages don’t seem to work out. I should add that a life of prostitution does not always seem to exact a heavy toll. I know of one lady in the business in Nana Plaza who has put two grandchildren through university from her proceeds! She does not look nearly old enough to have grandchildren, grown or otherwise, and I know there would be a lot of surprised customers if they only knew her real age. Many of the girls somehow never seem to lose their freshness.
It’s a mixed bag really. A lot of girls send at least part of their money upcountry to help their families or for their children, who are often being raised by the girls’ parents. But many others cut loose upon experiencing freedom in the Big City, and they start looking bedraggled in a few years. You usually don’t see the ravages of drug addiction in these girls like in a lot of Western prostitutes
There are some who do drugs, but they’re not very common. Too much competition from too many other girls who don’t use drugs; the drug addicts mess up before too long in some way and get themselves thrown in jail or worse.
As for how often the girls have sex, the more popular ones might actually service 6-10 customers on any given day. But some girls opt to do it as a sideline, hanging out in freelancer places in their off hours or picking up tricks along Sukhumvit Road in the wee hours of the morning. Their frequency is not as much. If there are any prostitutes using drugs, it’s usually among this crowd, as bar owners generally won’t tolerate that sort of thing.
But like I said, any physical deterioration actually seems to come from the effects of the general fast-lane lifestyle rather than from having so much sex.
There are prostitutes and there are prostitutes. Some get into the business because of drug habits. Others are high-end “escorts” who live lavish lifestyles and only “date” wealthy men. They dine at the best restaurants, travel in style, and are more than just a fuck; they’re companions. They run some of the risks of low-end whores, but in general, they’re more like fancy dates who put out.
Yes. Rather like an email acquaintance of mine who accidentally outed herself to me a couple of months back. $200 per hour and she expects to be treated with courtesy and restraint. On her own say-so she trades on repeat business and has a day job that doesn’t entail getting laid so she takes on as many spare-time engagements as she feels inclined to, no more.
If prostitution were legal, I suppose it might be made safer by regulating the number of clients a prostitute is allowed to serve in a week. I wonder if they do it that way in Nevada?

Neither. Employees of bars and massage parlors, able to leave anytime they want. In fact, it’s quite a headache for bars when a popular mamasan quits to work in another bar, and then a large number of girls quit to follow her over to the new bar.
That’s the Western-oriented ones anyway. You still hear stories of the girls who service Thai men, particularly the lower-paid manual laborers. There’s some slavery still going on there, especially of Burmese and Cambodian girls, but the Western-oriented nightlife is free of that and has been for a long time. The girls are paid more and are their own free agents. No pimp setups like in the West. But you still read some sensationalized stories in the West, because the reality is rather mundane.
Now Cambodia is pretty bad. There’s some very sad practices going on over there, every bit as bad as you could want to read.
