It’s almost election day, and soon most of us will be heading to the polls to cast our votes for this guy and that guy, this gal and that dirtbag over there.
Now obviously, if you support someone, you vote for them. But what else are you doing to make sure your guy or gal has the most votes come election night? Now it’s up to you to define “help,” and I really don’t care how small the thing is-- if you think it’ll make a difference (putting up a yard sign, donating a box of clipboards to the local campaign office, convincing one person to vote your way, driving an elderly supporter to the polls on election day, etc.), then include it on your list.
I’ll start.
Obama:
-Money. Have donated just over $100 to his campaign this year, will probably donate another $50 or so in the final two weeks.
-Meme. The night Romney announced Ryan as his running mate, I started a tumblr called Paul Ryan Gosling, which pokes fun at the Republican ticket. It’s actually gotten some publicity from ABC news, Yahoo, and a number of blogs and entertainment sites, plus it’s made its way around Facebook and Twitter and Tumblr. I started it just as a joke for between my friends and family, but it’s ended up getting a lot more eyeballs on it than I ever expected.
-GOTV. Driving to Toledo to do some GOTV on election day with my wife.
-Recruitment. Logically and rationally convinced my mother to cast a vote for Obama. She voted for McCain last time, and this time she didn’t. She’s even done campaigning for the prez this time around.
Jim Graves (Michelle Bachmann challenger):
-Donation. I’ll be sending a few bucks his way this week.
I sent a lot of money to Obama, and to the a couple of judicial candidates, the guys running for State A.G., Governor, local congress seat, and for Insurance Commissioner.
I have serious thought the request from the Obama campaign to travel (at my own expense) to NV or WI to be an election lawyer, but I just don’t have the time. So, just money this time. I bet if you added it all up, I gave around $5k this year to worthy candidates
Donated a good amount to the Obama campaign and Democratic campaign committees. Tried to convince friends and family to vote, and convince them that they should vote for my candidates.
Remind unenthusiastic Democrats that we have had some redonkulous SCOTUS opinions over the last several years and Romney is probably going to be able to appoint two justices.
Remind everyone how Republican held tax cuts for 98% of Americans hostage to ensure that the top 2% got their tax break. Remind everyone how the only tax cut that Republicans have insisted be paid for this congress has been the payroll tax cut.
Single bump. No one else is doing anything for any candidates or ballot proposals? I’m just really curious about what lengths people here are going to, big or small, to help their side.
I did a whole bunch of sweat and shoe leather last time around for Obama (having done the same for McCaskill in '06). This time out, I have a kid. And it is just really hard to do anything but throw money at the situation. I did max out my contributions for Obama, though.
I mean that it didn’t ask for the 3-digit security code on the back, and it allowed to me to enter in an address that had nothing to do with the billing address. Different state, in fact.
Donated to Obama campaign, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and selected Dem. U.S. Senate and U.S. House candidates. Continued to donate despite the siege of e-mails that come every 15 minutes and outnumber every other sender in my inbox. For anything else, that would be an instant ticket to my junk e-mail folder.
I donated $15 to Obama and put his sign on my front lawn. I know I won’t convince anybody in my neighborhood, but damn near everyone around me has Romney signs and I wanted them to know there is at least one coming from the same demographic and pays the same property taxes that is dissenting.
I don’t count drunken political debates with friends as canvassing but I suppose it is.
