Wow, “Links with no description provided” is really running away with this thing.
Sometimes, not always, the board fails to come up with some of most obvious things that OP asked and explained in length. Sometimes explanation can be redundant. I do agree that it may snuff or discourage some posters from discussing the particular item. But then just the fact that the particular item (that everyone failed to think of) has been brought up might be enough to ignite a great discussion. It’s just that I don’t like black & white absolute rules on things like this. I don’t dispute temptations for quick Listbot-ing, particularly if one doesn’t quite have time to elaborate, do exist.
(Sorry to pick on you, Mac)
Mac_bolan00’s post in this thread is what I consider to be an example of Listbotting™. The question is “Greatest Sports Movies”, and Bolan listed 16 of them. I will say that Bolan did pick out three from his list that he considers “greater” than the others, but why not stick with the OP and merely list those three (including some commentary), allowing other posters to mention their unmentioned faves?
Hunter Hawk’s post in this thread about book recommendations, OTOH, while still a list, I don’t consider it to be a mere Listbot: beside most of the entries, Hunter writes something about the book(s), even if it’s just to note that the book is part of a larger series.
Of course, if the OP requests lists with no commentary, there’s no complaint. I just much rather prefer to read a person’s comments about one movie that fits the topic than a list of 20 movies (with no comments) that fit the topic.
JohnT, I have no problem with your analysis of the examples. I feel every thread has different flow/dynamics.
Yeah, like pornography, it’s rather subjective, but I know it when I see it!
Troll feeding. Sometimes it’s for fun, and those threads can be entertaining, but it’s disappointing to see a newbie post something inflammatory or outrageous and have people take him seriously.
That’s sort of a “Damned if you do…” situation. Take the newb seriously and reply seriously and you get accused of feeding trolls. Blow the jerk off and you get lambasted for drive-by jokery. No matter what you do, you are going to annoy somebody here.
I started this–cross my heart and hope to die–and I apologize. Hell, they get on my nerves now. It was a one-off thing I noticed that I never expected to take off.
“(x) posts and nobody’s mentioned…?” has only 49 votes as of this post. Who do I bribe to get that number up?
My “Others”:
exclamation points in topic titles
complaining about zombie jokes in zombie topics
completely uncalled for political jabs in CS or GQ topics
I shall re-open this thread in 2015 just to piss you off.

mmm
Now THAT’S a tagline for the boards!
I’ve never understood why anyone is annoyed by zombie threads. Maybe if it’s something like a person lamenting the death of their dog and now it’s been five years ago, but if it’s jsut a general topic, so what?
I’m a Christian. I’m tired of atheists on the board declaring that religious people are idiots. Too often on the internet people are reduced to stereotypes. I know the majority of atheists are just regular people and not angry people who demand all traces of religion be removed from everywhere. Just like the majority of Christians aren’t shouting at random people on the streets about how they’re going to hell and speaking in tongues. It’s easy to insult other people’s belief system if you reduce everybody to a stereotype.
I usually do a good job of noticing the post dates. But when I don’t, I get annoyed because anyone I was responding to is much less likely to respond back - either because they’re no longer active on the board, the thread has sunk on their items of interest, or any other number of reasons. It’s pretty minor, but the whole thing would have been better off with just a new thread where all participants are active.
What really irks is when a brand-new poster bumps a zombie thread that has a lot of interesting and informative discussion and commentary on the topic, only to post what is basically just a restated version of the original OP. Like, if you just wanted to start a new thread, start a new thread.
Other: just generally bad writing. No capitalization, lots of typos, bad punctuation. Lots of chatroom abbreviations that slow me down while I figure them out. Do you want me to read your post or not? You sound like a woolly-headed seventh grader talking a mile a minute. Stop talking and SAY SOMETHING! :dubious:
Where’s the choice for the “we are the hippest, smartest people on the internet” delusion?
Also, I don’t see a choice for the pissing contest threads where everyone started reading at progressively earlier ages and where everyone’s IQ is off the charts.
I hear this complaint a lot, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen it.
Ooh, I’ve got a new one:
Threads that are nothing but a string of in-joke references to some movie or song, but with no link provided for the rest of us uninformed squares. Although to be honest this may just fall under “Links provided with no explanation”.
