I can’t remember what album I had but I played the daylights out of it. I’m sure it had American Woman and These Eyes in it. I’m sure No Sugar Tonight and Hand Me Down too.
I opened this thread curious to see what what songs The Guess Who had done and was not expecting to comment. I only recognized two, American Woman and No Sugar Tonight. Realizing that they’re responsible for two of my top 50 rock songs ever, I’m binge listening on YouTube. I have no opinion on my number 3 yet but thank you all for introducing me to a much under-appreciated (IMHO) band.
“What do you think ‘diesel fixer, fixed a diesel, diesel fixed me, what a weasel’ means? Do you care? No! Do you love it anyway? Sure!”–Lester Bangs
“These Eyes” is one of those songs that always says 60s in flashing neon in my brain. It’s so far above any other of their songs that I can’t judge what’s in second. All I can say is I really, really like lots of their songs, their Wheatfield Soul album that it’s on is a wonder, and they are vastly underrated.
Don’t overlook Star Baby, No Time, and Life in the Boodstream.
mmm
Here’s a 1997 program about him that was aired on Canadian television.
I thought it was very good.“Him” apparently refers to Burton Cummings, not Albert Flasher as I was hoping.
American Woman
No Time
No Sugar Tonight/Mother Nature
No surprises there.
Guess I wasn’t specific enough when I said “him”. From what I know about the Guess Who, it sounds like most people considered the band to be Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, and some other guys.
Update:
I wondered what Mr. Cummings did in the years since the program aired. I put it in the spoiler box because at the end, the host said that he and his wife had separated. They obviously reconciled, because they are still married. He performs both as a solo artist, and with a number of other artists.
Hand Me Down World is of course the song I want playing over me as I slow walk away from an explosion.
As for Albert Flasher, I really dig the song but I always wonder if it was part of some rock musical I’ve never heard of.
Another great thing about The Guess Who is that their whole catalog makes great accompaniment when playing Turrican II.
I’m going to go with:
Follow Your Daughter Home
Sour Suite
and
Clap for the Wolfman
