If you are a fan of Dame Shirl’s bond themes, you might have missed ‘Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’, which was recorded for Thunderball, but didn’t make the cut of the movie for some reason. Its a proper old school John Barry bond theme though.
“The Premium Bond Theme” by Roy Wood. (I think you have to be English or an Anglophile to get the joke.)
I love them all in that guilty pleasure, junk food binge kind of way. They herald the arrival of two hours of cheese, guns, and macho throwaway puns.
My fascination with Sheena Easton, requires I say “For Your Eyes Only.”
I loved her on a talk show when Rove asks her to sing, “Morning Train,” and she said, “What about ‘For Your Eyes Only,’ you know I actually had another hit.”
She’s great.
My favorites:
- Goldeneye
- You Know My Name (Casino Royale)
- Dr. No Theme
- Tomorrow Never Dies
What I find really interesting is how all these very different songs are clearly identifiable as Bond songs, and the vast majority of them also feature the famous motif (the progression from fifth, minor sixth, major sixth, minor sixth) in some way - even if it’s very well hidden. In “You Know My Name”, for instance, it’s in the first notes of the chorus (“Arm yourself because no one else here will save you”), took me a while to figure that out.
Cool! I never realized that. I really like the lyrics of that song - has just the kind of steely-eyed, civilized menace that Bond personifies, and also alludes to the gamesmanship that the movie is all about: http://www.metrolyrics.com/you-know-my-name-lyrics-chris-cornell.html#
Thunderball - Tom Jones
You Only Live Twice - Nancy Sinatra
Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey
Yes! This one is great, thanks for the link.
