My two other favorites are “Live and Let Die” and “Nobody Does It Better.”
“Live and Let Die” is good and bad at the same time. I really don’t care for much of McCartney’s solo work, and this song is a good example why. It has its moments, but it also has some really weak spots.
“Nobody Does It Better” is interesting. I do NOT care for Carly Simon, although I think she has a wonderful singing voice and talent. The song has interesting lyrics and great music, and I really think she interprets it in a way that no one else could match.
Last time we had this thread, I said my favorite was Goldeneye, and I was mocked for it. Leaving aside that this was my favorite Bond movie because of the N64 game that came with it, which I played non-stop when I was 11, I do think it’s a good song, and I like the way the first notes of the theme come right after the big dramatic explosion in the intro.
Live and Let Die is a classic - used to play it on the oldies station I listened to as a kid.
I also like All Time High, the Octopussy theme song which is probably the least popular Bond theme ever. I can’t really explain why I like it, but I do. (The name of the movie never appears in the lyrics, unusual for these songs.)
I’ll tell you which song I did not like - the Quantum of Solace theme. I thought it was totally stupid. But I thought the Casino Royale one with Audioslave was pretty good.
I make a point of collecting all Bond themes into a playlist, and updating it as each new movie comes out. Some are good, some are great; a few suck. But together, they make an *awesome *collection.
Others that I like are:
Diamonds Are Forever
Nobody Does it Better (from The Spy Who Loved Me)
For Your Eyes Only
All Time High (from Octopussy)
The Living Daylights
The World is Not Enough
Worst is Moonraker, which is fitting, as it’s the worst movie, too.
My favorite is “The World is Not Enough” but . . .
. . . I can NOT BELIEVE it took 9 posts to get to “A View to a Kill”.
“A View to a Kill” is probably my second favorite, maybe neck and neck with “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are Forever”. If you don’t have Shirley Bassey at least in your top three, there’s just something wrong with you.
And let’s round out my top five with a bit of Tom Jones!
While I wouldn’t call “GoldenEye” the greatest, it is a perfectly decent little song.
My favorites are probably a three-way tie between “Live and Let Die,” “A View to a Kill,” and “Goldfinger.” I’m also pretty partial to “Tomorrow Never Dies” (loves me some Sheryl Crow), “You Know My Name” and “Nobody Does It Better.”
The wretched “Die Another Day” and “Another Way to Die” (from Quantum of Solace) are at the bottom of the pile.
I’ve actually liked Lulu’s “The Man with the Golden Gun” ever since I was a kid when I first saw it. I also like Garbage’s, Tom Jones’s, and Sheryl Crow’s.
Another fan of You Only Live Twice. I remember as a kid riding my bike to the mall to buy the Bond album every time a new movie came out. I listened intently to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and studied the cover trying to imagine what the movie would be like.
Tomorrow Never Dies contains my favorite Bond theme (Sheryl Crow’s) and my favorite Bond girl (Michelle Yeoh). Otherwise it’s kind of a shitty film.
I was also pleasantly surprised by “You Know My Name” - maybe not the best of the bunch but it tied in well to the “reboot” theme and didn’t try to create a song around the words “Casino Royale” which would have been awful (see “A View To a Kill”).
Worst Bond theme has to go to Die Another Day. Oh Madonna, your theme song is only exceeded in suckitude by your acting in the film.
