Titles says it all. I’m looking for a good balance of taste and a lack of “razor blades in the throat”. Marlbolo Ultra-Lights are not a good balance. Neither are regular (blue box) American Spirits. Something in the middle would be good.
And yes, I’m aware that not smoking at all would be even easier on the throat.
I really like the Marlboro Blend 27s. They have a lot more flavor than Marlboro Lights, yet are nowhere near as harsh as Marlboro reds or many other full-flavor cigarettes. Often times the packs are sold two for the price of one, which just sweetens the deal…in a sickly sweet, tarry kind of way.
Many . . . and I do mean MANY . . . years ago Lucky Strike advertised that their cigs were “easy on your ‘T’ zone” (throat). They even had singers like Vaughn Monroe and, I think, Frank Sinatra doing ads for them. So go for the unfiltered “lung busters.” kids. You’ll die younger, but your throat will feel fine. Unless, of course, you die of throat cancer.
Yes, I’m one of those insufferable former smokers. That’s why I’m still alive.
I’ve been smoking Camel Lights for several years, and have had no problems with throat irritation. It seems to me that the cheaper brands are worse than the name brands.
Oh, and I’d love to quit, but I tried a few times and failed. The last time, I ended up, after 24 hours without a cigarette, face down in my pillow, bawling like a little girl. My husband could take no more, and brought me a cigarette and told me to smoke it or shut up.
I smoked it. I have NO willpower to speak of. It’s shameful, I know.
Yeeee…
When I still smoked, I was partial to Winstons. Better on the throat and much more tasty than a Marlboro (which was what I usually smoked actually, mostly because Mr. Creature hated Winstons - Marlboros tasted like dirt to me).
Once I had these things called Naturals, or something, I remember they were brown. Very nice smoke as well.
Yeah sometimes I miss not smoking. But I’m not gonna do it again, at least habitually.
I second this. Rolling your own has many advantages, smoothness amongst them.
The tobacco is moister than in packs, which helps the smoothness. You can tell because if you smoke as often as I do (about once a month), the bag dries out and the smoke gets harsher.
The tobacco is not as chemicalized as cigarettes, as rumour goes (no cite, but my wife works for the MArlboro Man and I here their rumours).
The taste and smell are far superior, IMHO.
There are many different brands and types, so you should be able to find one you like: Djarum, Drum, Samson, Gauloises, Sixty 1, American Spirit, etc. Try a half-shag if you are looking for smooth.
You can also buy hemp rolling paper (at least here you can, and I can mail you some if you want) which is also lighter than the cellulose/wood fibre paper of cigarettes. Rizla also sells lighter paper.
You can use a filter - they sell these mini-filters that are about the size of a pencil eraser.
There is no tobacco tax, only a cigarrette tax. You will find it is cheaper to roll your own by far. You also control the amount of tobacco.
Lastly, and most importantly, chicks dig it. The process, the equipment (you can get a leather pouch, a silver paper holder and a zippo), the care and ability to make a perfect hand-rolled cigarette shows some style. It is a conversation starter and separates you from a nicotine junkie and someone who truly enjoys a good smoke.
Camel Lights are easy on my throat as well. For some reason, the only time my throat will start to hurt is if I go several days without smoking (I’m very inconsistant with my smoking, a week and a half smoking heavily, 3 or 4 days off altogether, a week of moderate smoking, etc…).
I’ll third the Rolling your own option, for all the reasons Tomcat gave. This is if you’re using a good European style long cut moist tobac. Handroll has a bad rep here in the U.S. because of the low rent image and the fact that domestic handroll tobacco is harsh, powdery, sugared crap.
I loved DRUM when it was being made by Douwe Egberts, but they stopped shipping it to the U.S. They sold the rights to the name to Republic tobacco, the same people who make ‘Top’, which is horrible. DMark, Is the Drum you get made by D.E. or Republic Tobacco? The best I can get nowadays is Bali Shag, which is almost as good as I remember DRUM being.
I prefer Camel Special Lights. They’re a bit smoother than normal Camel Lights (which are quite smooth already). I never had any problem with them roughing up my throat like other brands did.
Of course, I’m not sure you want to take my advice. I recently quit smoking. It has currently been 26 days, 22 hours and 15 minutes since my last smoke. Yes, I’m still craving it just as strongly as I did when I first put them down. I’ve put on a few pounds and my friends are still avoiding me due to my temper being completely shot, but I am told that the health benefits will make it all worthwhile.
