Obviously most of us are in the stage where we’d rather make a lot of money for ourselves, but… suppose you were on a game show or reality show that donated a lot money to the charity of your choosing if you won. What charity would that be?
I’m not really sure myself, but if I were going to keep it in America very possibly St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Shriners burn unit charities (coincidentally the one that Sanjaya’s playing for currently) as I’ve known families who were helped by both of them.
Internationally I like heifer.org (supplies dairy goats and dairy cows to impoverished families in Africa and Asia) and ‘Nothing But Nets’ (a charity that donates mosquito netting in 3rd world countries).
Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario, in London ON, and if possible for two, the Ronald McDonald’s house in London.
The first saved my son’s life. The second made my being there with him a whole lot easier and more comfortable. And the fooliefamily story was fast and easy compared to those of many around us.
St Joseph’s Hospice, Hackney. My Grandad got the best possible care there - I’m so happy that he spent the last few months of his life in a place that was full of people who really cared about their patients, and I want as many people as possible to have that. I couldn’t have imagined a building that’s so full of death feeling as calm and loving as St Joseph’s Hospice did.

The Humane Society of the United States. I give regularly to them now, and will hopefully leave money to them in my will. So I’d definitely want to win gameshow money for them too!
As it happens, I did play for the LRF a few weeks ago! The Atlanta Scavenger Hunters Meetup hosts regular hunts around the city, and the winners get a donation for the charity of their choice.
We all know the disease from late night lawyer commercials, but Meso is a deadly, horrifying cancer that gets little funding when compared to breast cancer and the like. I used to temp there and they do great work with the little they get.
The other is the Dream Foundation. It’s like Make-a-wish, but for adults. It really is sad when you read some of the profiles. Some want a trip to Disney with their families, others a laptop so they can talk to their kids, some want to see siblings for the last time. One wanted to take a train ride with his wife.
It is only for adults with a terminal illness that have been given a year or less to live.
If I weren’t a poor college student I would definitely be giving to these organizations now.
Oh, so many I’d want to help. Heifer.org, SPCA, Alzheimer’s research, parrot rescue groups…the list is so long I’d have to put them all in a hat and draw one out!
Heifer International (my grandfather the dairy farmer used to donate a calf every year)
Planned Parenthood (have been a tremendous resource to myself and many people I know)
