Chronos closed my (admittedly very stupid) thread about the John Irving “joke.” No problem. It had run its course. But he closed it with the following message:
I want to know what other posts he’s referring to, because I certainly did not intend to go over the line with anything. If I did, I’ll dial it back. But it’s just not clear to me what other posts he means.
Have you been intending to engage in a lot of satire lately, say, making fun of aceplace and others by mimicking their styles?
I believe I’ve seen you doing this, but the satirical element may not be coming through as loudly as you want. It’s less, “I have a modest proposal to eat Irish babies,” and more, “I think we should put Irish children in workhouses!” You may intend satire, but it’s been hard to tell.
Yeah, that thread wasn’t intended as trolling, more that my train of thought was…more like a plane of thought, if you know what I’m saying. Talk about overthinking a joke.
The Ace/Redneck “homage”, well, it’s hard not to kick someone when their whole posting persona is a giant “kick me” sign, but now that I think about it, they already have enough boot marks on their ass (I think they might actually share the same ass) for now.
The rule before has generally been that, if you’re mocking trends on the site, it goes in the Pit. That makes it a little more obvious you’re mocking instead of being legit. (And also sneak a link in to what you’re making fun of.)
If it was intended to mock another poster, it should have gone in the Pit. And also, parody threads are supposed to include a link to the original thread.
Unless you make it clear that you are joking, you take the risk that your post will be taken at face value.
Just to play Devil’s Advocate for a moment, the OP isn’t protesting the closure of the thread. He’s responding to Chronos’s comment “On review of the OP’s other posts…” and asking *which *other posts. Telling him which other posts should be the main topic of this thread.
Sunny Daze has shown one example. Are there any others?
While I can’t say I’m entirely flattered by being compared to the Devil, I must basically agree with the above…“degrading” women seems like a bit of a stretch, even IF you were taking my Ace-post at face value.
