My Steam link and controller arrived in the mail today. I was able to get it up and running with relatively few problems.
I tried it on Stardew Valley, which is largely point and click on the PC. I used a config template offered by the community.
…Oy.
This is clearly the sort of thing that is going to take a lot of practice. I’m talking weeks, possibly months. It’s so counterintuitive to a traditional game controller, I think that is the hardest thing about it. You keep expecting it to work like a PS2 (yeah, I’m that far out of the loop on console gaming) and it doesn’t. It’s this whole other thing.
Currently, my skill level with this thing renders the game unplayable. In Stardew Valley, it normally takes me until around 1pm (gametime) at the latest to complete my farming chores. I had only watered one row of crops by 9pm! At this rate all of my crops will die.
As annoying as this is, I do see potential and I am going to try to stick with it, maybe practice for 30 minutes or so a day (that’s all I can stand, frankly.) It’s comfortable enough to hold, and some of the inputs are interesting. For example, the handles are each a button on their own, and then the right side has this sort of haptic trackpad that is currently bound to the mouse pointer. It seems like it has the potential for a lot of precision.
The only real question is whether I can tolerate the frustration for long enough to learn how to use it.
Picked up Assassin’s Creed Black Flag before the sale ended. Spent a day downloading it and it won’t launch at all. Supposedly it’s a common problem, which begs the question - why the hell are you selling a product that doesn’t work. Went through every tip, suggestion, etc available on Steam, the manufacturer’s website, and plenty of online tutorials to supposedly solve it to no avail.
One of the reasons I hate the stupid uplay launcher and Ubisoft’s terrible support for some of it’s older PC titles. I still have several games tied to a second Uplay account that they refuse to let me merge into one.
Assuming you’ve already tried verifying the game cache, and maybe reinstalling uplay, get a refund.
Yeah, that’s where I’m headed and it’s a real shame because I was very much looking forward to playing it. The funny thing is, I can play III just fine and I can also play GTAV on almost the highest settings. It ain’t the computer.
I finally picked up Witcher 3, since the game of the year was cheapish(still 24 bucks though).
Although I have hit a new point in the “damn I’m getting old” continuum. I am seriously considering playing it in story only mode, which would have seemed so bizarre 10 or 15 years ago.
