What did you get for Christmas this year?

I got:

  • A copy of The Emperor of All Maladies which I am both excited and terrified to read,

  • Two new lid thermometers for my BBQ’s: one for my Weber 22" kettle and one for my Weber 18" WSM. I’ll have to wait until summer to install them because I’ll need to drill out a new hole and paint the newly exposed metal, and I dont have a good place to do that except the back yard.

  • A simple socket set with a t-handle and an assortment of screwdriver bits including hex head bits and Torx bits. It might end up living in my car as I dont have a lot of use for it in the house.

In my stocking I got some gum, some sugar-free caramels, and a Donkey Kong Hot Wheels car.

The absolute best thing I got was to spend this weekend with my lovely wife at the seaside sans kids, work, students, Zoom, emails, sick parents and grandparents… fucking hell, I needed this. After 10 months of Covid hell sitting on a balcony in the sunshine with the surf 100 yards away is just what I needed. Even though I planned and paid for it all, it’s the best gift I’ve received in years.

Those are great gifts, both to give and receive! 2020 themed is perfect

One of my puzzles is of some of the text of War of the Worlds laid out in an interesting way.

Forgot to mention before, but I also got a Mickey Mouse themed Google Home mini holder. It actually looks very good, would definitely recommend it to any Google Home mini owner.

I got drunk.

I enjoyed (sic) The Emperor of All Maladies.

I got:
Awesome work gloves from my sister in Canada
10 days off work and a $250 bonus
A nice soft jacket
Killer socks
Dinner with my 87 year old mom
And I got drunk
I had a very merry Christmas!

We’re at the point in our lives where we prefer experiences to things in our lives, since we really have all the things we can stand at this point, BUT that wasn’t going to work well this year. So my husband and I got each other things (though he did need a replacement for the work laptop he had to give up when he retired, so I know he appreciated my doing that and setting it up for him).

But then my BIL found a bed and breakfast in one of our favorite minication locations that was willing to sell a gift certificate good until 2025. So that is our favorite gift of this year. We anxiously await the time when we’ll be able to use it!

(NOTE: I’ve read The Emperor of All Maladies, and it’s a fantastic book, but it’s detailed and not exactly a joyride, so buckle up).

I have been obsessed with perfume lately so I got some new ones, my favorites are Mon Guerlain and Delina by Parfums de Marly. I got a couple of new cookbooks, “Chasing Flavor” by Dan Kluger, and “Clara’s Kitchen” by Clara Cannucciari (she was an older lady who talked about what cooking was like during the Depression years and became popular on YouTube). A puppies calendar, Seattle Chocolate, a Yeti mug and some cute Christmas decorations.

My husband wanted a new Adirondack rocker and table for outside, so he got that as his main present, along with some cute little things that I thought would amuse him (like a Snoopy tshirt that says I’ll Do It Tomorrow).

It was a nice day, just the two of us and our little dog. A lot to be grateful for.
