When I see certain posters’ names, I get an associated impression in my mind. I don’t mean an association with the person himself or herself, but a third-party, irrelevant impression. In my case, it’s a song (or even a snippet of music or a lyric).
Persephone - Bob Dylan’s “Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis blues again”. Why, you ask? Cause her name kind of fits in the chorus, at least metrically: “Stuck inside of Straight Dope with Persephone again”
Jack Batty - Eminem’s “Slim Shady” song. “I’m Jack Batty, you know the real Jack Batty, you know those other Jack Battys are just imitating…”
TroubleAgain - Grateful Dead’s “Casey Jones”; specifically, this lyric: “Trouble ahead, oh, lady in red/Take my advice, you’d be better off dead.”
CrankyAsAnOldMan - The Beatles’ “Baby, you’re a rich man”. “Cranky as an old man, cranky as an old man, cranky as an old man, too…”
jarbabyj - Sheryl Crow’s “Run baby run” - “jarbaby, jarbaby, jarbaby…” Ok, so that might be more easily understood if you heard the song…
Oh, what a twisted cerebellum…
Anyway, what associations do you make in YOUR mind with the names of your fellow Dopers?
Oddly enough, I’m not even the “real” Jack Batty. I got the name from a National Lampoon article about fictional band names (Cowboy Bob and the Jackbatties), but there are several actual Jack Batty’s about, most prominently a spokesman for GE.
What’s also ironic is that I think Eminem is frickin’ moron.
By the way, I dug up this little gem of a thread as a companion piece.
Thanks, Jack - great thread! Might explain a little why few have posted in here. Of course, I guess this thread probably got bumped to the third page by now…
jarbabyj’s name always makes me think back to this story I read in these books my grandmother bought back in the 30s. They were children’s stories. Some goops, some songs, aesops fables. And then there was one about a tarbaby. And this story, along with many others, had color illustrations and so did this one, and (I am so so sorry) but everytime I read this name the image pops into my head. Like a car crash you can’t forget you know?
I really, really should change my screen name. It’s not clever, wacky, or descriptive. Plus I blame it for the death of drive-in theaters, chronic halitosis, the Mideast crisis, and the designated hitter rule in baseball.
funny you should be the one starting this thread because dantheman reminds me of this guy named Dan that I had a torrid one-night-stand kind of thing with once. It was very unlike me at the time, but I was getting out from under a fog of months-long gloom and depression and I guess the stars were right for me to boink some big-dicked guy in a hot tub after a night of dancing.
It’s not a bad association, but I do feel sheepish. Especially since I called him a few times after that, despite the fact that he clearly wanted nothing to do with me and I was way old enough to see the signs and know better.
Before I add to this, maybe I should go read the thread Jack Batty dug up.
 I don’t know that song…maybe I should look up the rest of the lyrics to see if I should be horrified!
Anyway, dantheman, when I see your name, I think of a guy being lifted up on his teammates shoulders while they cheer “Dan the Man” over and over again…
ssskugiii reminds me of a passage in Ellen Degeneres’ book My Point (and I Do Have One) where she has a conversation with a character named Spoogy and it leads to “Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar.”
Whenever I see iampunha’s name, I always pronounce it to myself as “lampoonah.”
Fenris makes me think of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, specifically the part where “Save Ferris” is written on the water tower.
Sealemon88 makes me think of his website, especially the dancing portion. (That’s his website, right? “Ze’s Page”? Please tell me that’s his site, or else I feel like a dummy.)
Persephone reminds me of my freshman year Geometry class. There were these two black girls who would do nothing but gossip, and they would always talk about a certain “Persephone” and her boyfriend.
pepperlandgirl reminds me of the opening scene in The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, where everything is happy and beautiful and the narrator is talking very very slowly about Pepperland.
Vinnie Virginslayer makes me think of Vinnie Barbarino from Welcome Back, Kotter.
I haven’t seen her around lately, but when I see the name Tabithina, I immediately feel like singing the theme song to “Oklahoma” except with her name in place of “Oklahoma” of course.
And since Jeannie is the poster I saw right before I posted, her name reminds me of a girl I had a crush on in high school, and I picture her as a blonde with a ponytail and cute little freckles on her nose. I have no idea what the poster Jeannie really looks like though.
I’m not going to hurt you ** because ** like I’ve posted in the usename threads,it’s based somewhat on Barbie Girl. One of my best friends made up a song called Hardy Girl to the tune of Barbie Girl to honor my Jeff Hardy fetish.
The spelling of -girl to -grrl is to reflect my love for punk. As in the Riot Grrl movement…
Back to the OP…everytime I see ** blur ** I get that song of theirs in my head…you know, the one that goes…
