What do the thread icons mean?

I’m wondering what all the icons mean in the thread list view. Specifically, what’s the difference on the left between an “open envelope” and a “closed envelope” (I’ve figured out that the envelope with a lock on it means a locked thread)? And what does a check mark to the right of a thread title mean?

More importantly, where should I have looked to find all this out by myself?

Edit: It appears that hovering over the check mark creates a little popup text revealing that ha! I am subscribed to that thread. But! Hovering over the envelope icons reveals nothing… and, I am still curious in general about where to find a guide to the SDMB interface.

open envelope means there have been new posts since you last logged in, also indicated by bolding of the thread title.

closed envelope and normal text mean no new posts

And check mark next to an envelope means it was a thread that YOU replied to, more simply.

And other than the check mark key, there is a legend at the bottom of every page with what the envelopes mean. Just scroll down all the way to the bottom of the page while in a forum topic index.

Edited: Actually if you have all subscribing on, then threads you subscribed to/replied to are mostly always the same ones anyway.

The stock vBulletin thread icons can be kind of confusing.

A plain envelope is a thread.

Opened envelope: new posts since your last visit.

Red envelope (or flaming envelope on older versions of VBulletin): “hot” thread; number of views above some administrator-specified number. (Disabled on the SDMB)

Check mark (or dot over the envelope on older versions): thread you posted in. (Disabled on the SDMB)

Lock over the envelope: closed thread.

Arrow over the envelope: thread moved to another subforum.

Any of the above can be combined. For example, an open red envelope with a dot indicates a “hot” thread that you posted in, with new messages since your last visit.

Holy moly. I swear I looked for something like that and it did not exist until you wrote about it’s existence. lol :smack:

Well I figured it would be something obvious once pointed out to me. I’m assuming that the other envelope types mentioned don’t appear in the legend unless they are actually used on that page?

Thanks all!
