Oh, yeah, it’s definitely okay to express skepticism. It’s just that after it’s gone on for 4 pages, and it involves a well-known, and in the eyes of the SDMB, already well-debunked conspiracy theory, people tend to get a tad irritable with yet another, “Yes, but…”

I got jumped on a teeny bit a while back when I stubbornly persisted in believing, in the face of all evidence to the contrary, that there’s a ghost in Three Men and a Baby. But it didn’t go on for 4 pages, because somebody finally weighed in with a train of thought that made sense to me, explaining the picture. So I went, “Oh. Okay.” [shrug]

The thing I like most about you, Bick, is that so far you’ve been, in a word, polite. We’ve seen a lot of conspiracy theorists come (and go), and the reason they go is usually because they get all pissy and hysterical when THEY can’t convince US, for example, that the moon landings were a hoax. Then they start spewing venom, and dribbling shit all over the boards, and they get lots of flame threads started about them, and eventually they get so mad that they stomp off, fuming.

So you’re doing well so far–you’re not here to make converts, you’re not here to pick a fight. Keep up the good work!

RiverRat? ) So, how can I tell you how Bick is different from these people, if I don’t even know who they are?

I’m not gonna comment on BickByro, since I haven’t read a single post of his, outside of this thread. However, I think I understand the category of poster that Brian’s referring to here.

John John (aka Cyberian54) is still around, over on Fathom, as Johnsbury1. I remember P… all too well. And I am quite familiar with the creationists.

What I see here are a group of people who definitely have brain cells to rub together, and can create what look like plausible arguments. In this respect, they superficially appear to be among the fighters of ignorance.

However, their particular obsessions (JDT and circumcision; Johnsbury and the Clintons; every creationist and evolution) seem to grab hold of them to the extent where they can’t admit the failings of their arguments, even when pointed out to them in great detail.

Is this close to what you had in mind, Brian?

If we’re comparing them to LOTR characters, I’d vote for Saruman, who looked like one of the good guys long after he’d embarked on his personal quest for domination of Middle-Earth.

I have a long-standing private name for these types and, in a strange coincidence, I just referred to it rather obliquely in another thread. A little background – I have a theory that there are two things mankind will always feel led to do: They will fight and they will fuck. It is, as I like to say, the nature of the beast. We teeming millions are ignorance fighters, right? So I call the above types: ignorance fuckers. Those who willingly embrace ignorance.

Because this asshole was only here a few hours, he would have been easy to miss. I must admit that I was shocked by the level of hate and ignorance this guy spewed forth in only a handful of posts, mostly because his nastiness was directed at me.

Now I may be silly at times, opinionated or even just plain wrong (rarely) but I am definitely not a "crack smoking whore with the intelligence of a chicken or even a “merfag” (sic).

Oh, Satan, I understand how it can be painful and frustrating reading posts by or arguing with unreasonable people, but I thought the point of the SDMB is “to fight ignorance.” The people on the SDMB would be bored if they didn’t come across ignorant people.

I am new to this board, and I’ve been shocked but not surprised at some of the stuff people put on here. Maybe after a while, I’ll get to the point you’re at, but right now I want to believe that the people you’re talking about have learned from their encounters on the SDMB.

Therefore, I propose this name for ignorant people and their posts: Necessarily Evil Crap or NECs for short.

What do you think? They do after all stick their necks out there and fight for the side of ignorance.
