As for everyone who is saying “they’re not trolls,” I am aware of this. This is exactly why we need to come up with something to call them. I used the word troll in the OP only to try and define exactly whom I am talking about with some degree of recognition since we don’t have a word for these folks yet. I mean, I had to come up with SOME way to describe them… If I thought they were simply trolls, why yes, there wouldn’t be a need for this thread.

Oh, another thing I just thought of: Intellectual Dishonesty. This is another trait of this type of poster. Someone who will avoid debates, twist them around until they are not at all what you THOUGHT you were discussing, and never give a straight answer to the simplest challenges.

And for the record, there is a difference between disagreeing with someone who says “I am pro-choice” and someone who claims that some basic FACTS, whether they are from science, math or historical events, are wrong and steadfastly stick to them in spite of being shown multiple times (many of them nicely) how they are wrong.

If people REALLY don’t see the difference between the likes of David B, pldennison and jodi - all of whom can be QUITE WILLING to disagree with a particular view and argue it to death down to the smallest fraction of semantic nuance (and I’m probably guilty as charged as well) and the likes of Phaedrus, who led everyone on a wild goose chase, the creationists who will argue with illogic and incorrect data and never actually admit errors in their critical thinking, to FriendofGod, who is notorious for his intellectual dishonesty, and this guy who essentially admitted already in that thread that nothing would satisfy him that we went to the moon, then I don’t know what you’re thinking.

Most of the people in this thread got it. I like the names thus far. “Hydra” is a personal favorite…

Well, if you really want to get the goat of posters like Phaedrus, JDT, and the like: don’t give them all this attention. If there’s one thing I’ve learned these past few years, it’s that they don’t care what you write about them, as long as you do. So honestly, I don’t think “we” ought to come up with a name for them. “We” are better off ignoring them and banning their asses where appropriate.
And a troll is a troll. They can be smarter than the average fly-by idiot of the PitMeister variety, but a one-trick-pony poster just fishing for responses is a troll. Period.

See, they come in and act like they know what’s going on. They complete sentences with minimal grammer and punctuation mistakes. They seem to be aware of vB coding, and that it’s their friend. They might even come off as cordial, playful in fact. They actually look like… one of us!

There is no lame name copying a reg here… You won’t find these types starting threads in GQ talking about how Uncle Beer (to pull a mod I like randomly out of a hat) is a jerk… They don’t tell people to fuck off and die in their third post here…

Only after several exchanges does it begin to slowly dawn on us… THEY ARE NOT ONE OF US! They are… Pod People. They duped us into treating them like normal people, so we start having discussions with them. Debates. Generally try and act like everything is cool. And it is civil… for a while…

Finally, about a dozen or posts in, the cracks begin to show. But by then, you are already in the process of a discussion with this individual, so when the manipulation, lying, misunderstandings and sudden inability to get a point achnowledged comes around, you’re in too deep to get out.

Come on, man, you’re as much a victim of these types as the rest of us!

That is why we must come up with a name, and we have to work harder at identifying these folks earlier to avoid the ugliness that was Phaedrus at the end!

Socks are called socks for a reason, copycat trolls are called copycat trolls for a reason, and those names didn’t just come with the territory. People had to invent them.

Amen Coldie! Sure, we get suckered into debates with these idiots. Every once in a while someone comes along who is just too tempting NOT to flame and trash even though we know better. Hell, I’ll even admit that I rather enjoy a good flame fest with these dipshits. I enjoyed the RosieWolf/Idnew fracas so much I would have pulled a boner had I a penis.

However, those of us who have been around for a while know the reason these doofs act the way they do. ATTENTION. Give then a title, and just like we have seen with trolls and socks, they will see this as recognition not as defamation.

Flame them. Spank them. Ignore them. But don’t validate their existence by awarding them with a title. Besides, as we have seen in the past with accusing someone to be a troll, how long do you think it will be before the Admins and Mods ask us to stop?

Calling random names is a lot different than assigning a single title for a group of people, but I am sure you knew that.

There is a difference in calling someone a “dipshit” and giving them a label such as “troll” (or “word-yet-to-be-decided-upon”). Calling them an individual name is personal, give them a label and you imply that they are worthy of enough attention to join the exclusive few “word-yet-to-be-decided-upon” club. Do you not see how giving them this amount of attention is exactly what they look for? Why feed into their game?

Who will be in charge of the rule book? Can you call someone this “word-yet-to-be-decided-upon” because they don’t agree with you? Because they have some off the wall beliefs? Because they are obviously mentally ill? Because they are obsessed with foreskin? Because they won’t listen to reason? Because they refuse to stay on topic? Because they are bigots? Because they have a skewed view on poofed hair and perfumed crotches? Because they are simply seeing how much shit they can stir? Why not use some creativity in your insulting names instead of some generic title that will undoubtedly be misused, overused, and ultimately cause problems?

If they are an asshole, call them an asshole. If they are unreasonable, call them stupid. If they are idiots, flame them. If they are stirring the shit (trolling) email a mod. To clump them all into one neat and tidy package is only giving them a higher degree of attention, not to mention asking for the same types of problems that stemmed from the freely tossed “troll” accusations in the past.

I know that I am not the only one who sees the difference, otherwise the Admins and Mods would have put a stop to all name calling instead of specifically prohibiting calling someone a “troll”. In fact, I’ll remind you of your very recent words. Just substitute the word “troll” with the “word-yet-to-be-decided-upon”. See my point?
