My best friend and I have both read “A Cook’s Tour,” by Anthony Bourdain (which is a great book that everyone should read.) In one chapter in this book, the author visits Morocco and is served lamb’s testicles, which he claims are really excellent.
I have been going to a local Moroccan restaurant for years and have become very friendly with the manager. My friend and I have gotten it into our heads that this guy probably has access to lamb testicles, and that if he did, we could have him serve them to us even though they’re not on the menu. Even if he doesn’t have the balls to serve us, we think that he’d probably be happy to acquire them if we asked for them. So the next time we go there, we’re going to ask him to serve us lamb testicles.
The thing is, I want to ask him for this dish by its Moroccan name, so that he understands that I know what it is, and just as a gesture of familiarity. The guy’s conversational in English, but pretty broken English, so instead of explaining to him exactly what I want, I just want to be able to go “do you have [“lamb testicles” in Moroccan?]”
So, what is the word I’m looking for here, and how do I pronounce it?
