Lately I’ve been smoking a lot of ganja, and I’ve become fascinated by the marijuana sub-culture. Just having a conversation with someone involved in the drug game (whilst stoned, no less) can be a challenge, with the myriad of slang terms associated with the good herb.
Unfortunately, the multitude of words relating to weed make many people shy away from the experience of tokin’. This is what we use here: (Raleigh, NC)
schwag: A term describing low-grade weed. Sells for around $25 per quarter ounce, but may vary slightly.
dank: High-grade. The good shit. Sells here for $20 per gram, or $60 per 1/8th ounce.
I have heard terms on the internet like ‘KB’, or ‘kind bud’, but have never heard them used in casual conversation.
I would greatly like to hear what terms people use around the country, and around the world.
I’ve heard the term dank, but never used it amongst my circle of pothead friends. The term that we used was kind or KB.
I don’t know how many people did this, but we had a term for mid-range pot. We called any thing that was better than schwag but not quite KB, commercial. This was usually green as opposed to the brown crap that was schwag.
Don’t expect a whole lot of people to step up in a public forum like SDMB and admit to criminal activity (which it is almost everywhere in the US). International response should be interesting, to find out where it’s not illegal.
I am will to speak of my youth on the campus of the University of Illinois in the late 70’s. It was “Primo” or “really good shit” for really good pot. It was “skunkweed” or “shit” for bad pot.
And to us, a “quarter” was more likely a quarter-pound than a quarter-ounce. Pot was typically $30-35 an ounce, and we bought cooperatively for a further price break.

These days me and my friends only smoke hydro, short for hydroponically grown stuff that is really good, and grown by a couple buddies. Always support the local business man I say . There is usually a bit of ditchweed around cause the high octane stuff can hit a beginner really hard.
crap hit submit instead of preview. Anyway ditchweed comes from the fact that there is pot growing in some of ditches around Colorado, but it is really crappy stuff, so all bad stuff is called ditchweed. We do use KBs for good non hydro stuff. Midgrade stuff is called the Wednesday cause it’s not good enough for a real party on the weekend.
Me and my cousin used to just call it “weed.” If it was good, we called it “good weed.” or “That’s some smelly shet.” If it was crap, we’d just say “This weed is crap.” None of that retarded “KB” or “Kind bud” etc. I don’t think 90% of the people who use those terms even know what they’re talking about.
Schwag= Nasty shit that burns your throat won’t really get you very high.
Schmids= Between Schwag and mids, it’ll get you higher but still burns.
Mids= Typical midgrade stuff, pretty good although dank and dro are better.
Dank= Good high grade ganja, now a sort of fad term along with 420.
Dro= Short for Hydro (see wolfman’s post).
Purple= Heard of it but never smoked it (or any of the others… No no of course not). Anyway this stuff is supposedly grown under black lights, and one joint is easily enough for a group of four…
I’ve also heard of white stuff coated in crystalized THC, but I doubt that it exists.
Where to start…hmm in the UK, or at least my bit of it down south it goes like this.
Dope - generic term for any kind
Solids - Nasty resin block form - has any number of subterms
Weed - generic, bog standard grass
Skunk - Gonna knock your head off, the good stuff
White Widow - Specially treated, beware, find head in morning kinda stuff.
Dozens more but that’s the genaral.
Prices - £20/$30 for an 1/8th oz of for example white widow (buy in bulk I say, much cheaper, and I mean a lot)
Schwag, Buds, Dank, Skunk, Hydro, Chronic, Ganja, Sensemilla, etc. All the usual words.
Some of my friends used to have “code words.” Pizza, arts ‘n’ crafts, and the like. I always made fun of them, but the words did sometimes come in handy.
Don’t even get me started on the East Coast “Smoke Up” vs. the West Coast “Smoke Out” controversy.
‘Weed’ is a pretty generic term in the DFW Metroplex, ‘pot’ is also fairly common but it has slightly negative connotations, at least for me. Old people call it ‘grass’. Higher-than-average quality stuff often goes by ‘bud’, ‘hydro’ is the really good stuff. People sometimes call it by where it comes from if it is claimed to be somewhat exotic, i.e. ‘Thai bud’ (some of the best I’ve ever smoked BTW), ‘Northern Lights’, etc. If your dealer is honest you might hear the phrase ‘cheap Mexican weed’, it will probably take a fat one to get you and your friend high but you’re paying $40 an oz. so it’s all good.

I’ve always called it “smoke”, myself. Never did the code word thing Kyomara mentioned.
