Nothing. As a kid, I always got honey, because that’s what my parents did. I briefly switched to barbecue sauce for a bit. But I’ve gotten to where I rarely dip anything. Either the nugget is good on its own, or I don’t order it (though I’ll usually eat it if it’s there and I’m hungry enough.)
Honey mustard, however, is divine, and I do sometimes just try to come up with something bland to dip in it when I have some left over. Thing is, I only have the good nuggets in my house and don’t want to waste them. I’d be more likely to use a cheap fry.
I’ve never been a McNugget eater. If I get fast food chicken I get fried chicken pieces. I occasionally get a Wendy’s sandwich or Arby’s chicken finger for nostalgia. For Arby’s I’ve always used their bbq and honey mustard at the same time. Sometimes I eat my kids’ leftovers at home, and I mix honey and mustard to make my own.
Oh, I almost forgot. I get Raising Caine’s maybe once or twice a year. I would go there more if they offered more side options and other things. They supply their own house sauce and I don’t think they offer anything else.
I have a procedure for nuggets. I break them in the carton and douse them with sweet and sour. Then I cover them while I eat my fries. By the time I am done the sauce has soaked in to the nuggets and it’s become close enough to sweet and sour chicken that I don’t gag while eating them.
Honestly it’s been so long since I had McD’s I don’t know if they still serve them in cartons or if they have the same style of sweet and sour. It tasted strongly of pineapple back then and nothing like the regular pink sauce you find in bottles.
When I used to work at McD’s, I’d always be very excited for McRib season. Not because of the McRib itself (that shit is disgusting) but because I could dip my McNuggets in the rib sauce. That stuff was heaven in a warming pan.
The original flavors for McNuggests were (in order from good to bad) Hot Mustard, Sweet and Sour, Honey, and Barbecue. Of those, I absolutely hated barbecue. Blech. I wouldn’t put McDonald’s barbecue sauce on anything. Problem is, it seems the cashiers are taught to treat barbecue as the default. They always ask “would you like barbecue sauce with that?” and if they forget to ask, they just give you barbecue sauce.
At some point, I noticed they had stopped carrying honey. About a year or two ago, they introduced a bunch of new sauces, like honey mustard, all of which I hated. Problem is, they seemed to have stopped carrying hot mustard in some locations. It seems to be back now, fortunately.
Last time I had McNuggets, I had some kind of mustard sauce with them. Most recently I’ve been eating Burger King nuggets and I have buffalo sauce with them.
I am also in Texas so unfortunately it appears that our mileage varies. : (
I’m jealous that it never disappeared by you, but it definitely went away for some of us.
I just now found a Facebook page devoted to McDonald’s Hot Mustard.
Based on current comments (which seem to match what’s being reported in this thread) it seems like it is available in some locations but not everywhere.
Some more Hot Mustard discussion and hopefully not too much of a hijack since it’s related to the OP:
The McDonald’s nutrition facts link that I posted upthread is what shows up in a google search and it does not list Hot Mustard. However, despite the fact that it runs to 21 pages, the title says it is for popular menu items so maybe it is not as comprehensive as it appears to be. Also, scrolling down to the bottom I see that it is pretty old - from July 2014.
I went to the current McDonald’s web site to see if I could find a more up to date version and at first all I could find was their nutrition calculator.
So I added McNuggets to “My Meal” and then clicked on “Show Details”. There it gave me an option to customize the McNuggets and listed their sauces.
Hot Mustard is not one of the options.
I really wanted to check out the current version of their detailed nutrition facts and couldn’t easily find it. So I used their search function to find out how to contact them since I couldn’t find that info easily either - not on their home page anyways.
The search results had a link for “Contact Us and FAQs” so I tried there. (No link to FAQs from their home page either from what I can tell so I’m not impressed with their site.) Anyhow, I figured I’d see if the Hot Mustard question was in the FAQs before submitting my question about its availability.
And it was at that point, in the “Menu Items and Nutrition” section of the hidden FAQs that I finally stumbled across a link to their detailed nutiritional information.
It took me to this web page that does not appear to be hosted by them but says that it was generated by McDonalds.com and was effective 1-27-2017.
Finally some progress, and guess what? It lists Hot Mustard Sauce as a menu item!
So now I am off to the two closest McDonald’s to see if it really is available by me. If it isn’t, I will contact them through their web site and also check the couple of McDonald’s near my work tomorrow.
I need to get to the bottom of this - I have been missing and occasionally craving their Hot Mustard for years!
ETA - just found the link for “Contact” in tiny print at the bottom of the home page.
