For the past few years I’ve sported a full beard, cut close, with the same #2 clipper as the rest of my hair. But lately I’ve been seeing guys with big bushy beards, and I’m thinking of growing mine out (while still leaving the hair on top short).
If it matters, my beard is gray, while the hair on top is dark brown.
When you see a guy with such a beard, what do you think?
My opinion, big bushy beards only look good with long full hair. I am not a fan of the long bushy beard/short hair combo. I just don’t get it. Much like my parents didn’t get why a male would grow his hair over his ears and collar!
People mocked mullets, “business in the front, party in the back.” That’s what the full beard, short hair combo reminds me of. A short, tight, well barbered haircut looks really good on a lot of guys, why spoil that neat clean look with an Amish/mountain man bushy beard?
Having spent some time in the SCA, I’ve known a bunch of guys with big beards, so it’s not particularly odd to me. A friend once pointed out that, past a certain point, if you’re going to drive with your windows open, you need to bind it in a hair tie or it gets blown up into your face. One of the reasons dwarves braided their beards, I’m sure.
I agree, for the opposite reason. If you can get a big bushy beard, it seems sad to cut the rest of your hair short. Why spoil the beautiful mane with a short hair cut?
I tend to go through cycles, but that’s mostly because I’m incredibly lazy and haven’t actually shaved myself in years. I’ll let the beard grow out until I get my hair cut and get the barber to trim it down to a goat. My husband much prefers it trimmed down, though. He keeps saying it takes 10 years off of me. It’s not really a major concern to me, though.
If it’s clean and neat I think he’s a masculine man with good grooming. I like a good looking beard on a man. I don’t care if it’s dark, grey, or dyed. In fact, I kind of like the sort of man with the self-confidence to rock his grey or dye it blue or purple like some of the old ladies are dying their hair these days. I don’t have a problem with older guys looking older, or outright old guys looking old.
If it’s scraggly/tangled and you can see bits of yesterday’s lunch I think he’s a slob and/or has some sort of self-esteem or mental issues.
It’s just hair, after all, and he can wear his hair as he chooses. My preference is for clean and neat regardless of where on his head hair is located.
(Personally, I prefer beards to “man-buns” but that’s the old fart in me.)
There may be something to this. In my case, I figured I too closely resembled a guy living in a remote cabin in the woods when I let my beard grow too long.
So these days I keep hair and beard trimmed short. Less attention from the F.B.I.
I have a friend who can carry off the “balding on top, trimmed short, giant bushy beard” look, but honestly, despite my love of beards, I think he looks better when he trims it down. As others have said, you do you, but since you asked my opinion, my opinion is to keep the beard to a couple of inches or less.
