What do you think of the new five-blade razors?

I used one for a while after I got it as a free sample in the mail. IMO, it doesn’t shave you any closer than a two-blade, but it makes the shaving experience smoother and less itchy-painful.

The Quintippio is looking less and less like a joke.

Oooooh Ooooh OOOH!!!

My chance to link my second favorite Onion article of all times: Fuck Everything, We’re Doing Five Blades!

What’s your favorite?

This one.

Seehere. Or any number of other threads for “fusion razor.” There are those of us who love it, and those who think it’s overkill. I’m never going back to 3 blades, that’s for sure.

I think they’re hilarious. I haven’t tried one.

I am so behind the curve. I’m still at 2 blades.

Try shaving in the shower. Seriously. You don’t need a mirror. After washing, and you have been in there for a few minutes your beard becomes MUCH easier to shave with all the steam and such. No messy sink either.

Yeah, I’ve shaved in the shower for many years. Before, I would make a huge mess in the sink and on the counter, and never seemed to have time to clean it up because I was trying to get out the door to work.

What, no love for Stephen Hawking Builds Robotic Exoskeleton? And I always get a chuckle out of You Know, I Used To Be Kind Of Cool Once and Family Dog Suspected Cause Of Miniature Chuck-Wagon Disaster. All Of Family’s Neuroses Projected Onto Dog is too close to reality, though.

But yeah, the razor article is definitely in the Top Five.
*You’re taking the “safety” part of “safety razor” too literally, grandma. Cut the strings and soar. Let’s hit it. Let’s roll. This is our chance to make razor history. Let’s dream big. All you have to do is say that five blades can happen, and it will happen. If you aren’t on board, then fuck you. And if you’re on the board, then fuck you and your father. Hey, if I’m the only one who’ll take risks, I’m sure as hell happy to hog all the glory when the five-blade razor becomes the shaving tool for the U.S. of “this is how we shave now” A.*Somebody needs to pay Alec Baldwin to do a reading of this.

Stranger

Instead of yet more small blades, why not bigger blades? A slightly curved 5" razor could clean me up in two strokes. Provided I’m in the shower and not drunk yet.

Do you shave everyday? Less irritation makes all the difference to us thick bearded folks who are required to shave every freakin morning and sometimes twice a day.
I think even their commercials tought the “less irritation” thing more than the “shaves closer” claim.

I’d like the Onion a lot more if they stopped believing profanity is the pinnacle of humour.

I would think fancy multi-bladed razors were a crappy yet harmless diversion for some like some of those cool but rather useless things you may get as a gift. That lasted until I saw how much was spent to develop them: the now Old School and quaint Mach 3 cost at least $750,000,000 to develop.. I have heard up to $1 billion in development for some of the newest, cutting edge, bladery on a stick. I believe they spent that much but that is to the point of absurdity.

I don’t understand the whole gourmet shaving movement at all. I have a moderately thick beard and I have to shave every day. I have tried a free 5 bladed razor and it was a little different but worked fine. I never did figure out the advantage though. I have 3 or so brands of disposable razors that are cheap as dirt and do the job great already. The actual shaving part takes me literally about 1 minute or a little more if you count slapping some shaving cream on. No matter what, I am still going to have to shave the next day so I can’t see much improvement to be gained in this process for me. As soon as my freeby cartridges ran out, I took a look at the cartridge refill prices and went straight back to disposables.

3/4 BILLION dollars? That is fucked up.

How much does it cost to follow this chain of thought – two blades are better than one, so maybe three are better than two. Hey, let’s slap in another blade and try it out?

If only they’d hired me. I would have siggested this on day 1. And only charged 10 mil.

Since I work at home, I only shave about three times a week. I got a free Fusion from Costco at the beginning of November and started using it right away. I’m still using the same blade and haven’t noticed it getting duller. It’s a little better than the Mach 3, but not a huge improvement. When it does start to get noticeably dull, I’ll just toss it and go back to my Mach 3.

Personally, I use a safety razor + shaving soap and brush. It’s much better than any of the old, multi-bladed razors I used to use. The foam of the brush acts to keep water against your skin, so it’s much like shaving in the shower (which I also used to do). Highly recommended. A good place to start if you want to learn more is “shaveblog”, run buy a guy who is really into the old wetshaving techniques. This post gives his “starter kit.” I have a similar razor to that one, but use different things for everything else since I’m in France and it’s hard as hell to get that stuff here.

I’m going to venture into shaving with a straight razor soon, that’s supposed to be the epitome of a smooth, non-irritating shave.

Why do people use shaving soap/cream/foam? I just use hair conditioner, works just fine. Any kind of gloop will do. I also use conditioner instead of (not in addition to) shampoo, but then I do have dry hair. It’s versatile stuff. Also, I am fantastically cheap.

Bar soap instead of shaving cream in the shower is the ultimate cheap and easy solution.

Real men use a straight razors. I’ve never done it myself but plenty of barbershop straight razor shaves that were awesome (and a few not so).

I shave in the shower and use regular soap. In the past I’ve used shaving soap, which is nice but not necessary. Now that I travel a lot, I just collect whatever single or double bladed disposable razor that comes in the hotel, and never buy razors any more.
