What do you think?

Why do complete strangers constantly instant message me wanting to chat? I never asked them to IM me, I think it’s kinda rude. Or is that just me?

Don’t know. Perhaps. Probably not.

Oh, it’s not just you. I suspect every female online has had an unwanted IM tossed her way at one point. There are oodles of 13-year-old boys who scour the Web for people with female-sounding nicknames and then IM them in hopes of getting somewhere. Yep, it’s way rude. But hey, you can block them on most instant messengers, or at the very least ignore their requests to chat…

heh. I get them from 13 year old boys and girls.

Apparently that “Ranger” business throws them off.

You can block all but the people on your contact list list with most IM programs if that helps you.

I’ve never had a random hit on IM. On ICQ, tho, I’m constantly getting hits asking if I’m happily married and do I want to talk dirty… uh, yeah, sure, you big stud… oh baby oh baby make me all hot ooo ooo ooo… <yawn>

It’s a rare delight to meet someone on line who’s mastered small talk and intelligent exchange of views.

Being male pretty much makes me immune to getting personal messages from complete strangers, but when everyone on my contact list is offline and I feel like chatting, I feel free to send random messages to strangers.

This has enabled me to form some very good online friendships, and indeed, some cybersex, as well. But as long as you are polite and intelligent enough, and as long as your first “hi” is replied - no point in sending a second “hi” if the first is ignored - there is nothing wrong with just trying to see if it will be any fun.

I mean, if a guy is stupid enough to talk dirty in the second minute, he is probably a big time loser in real life as well.
