What does "fried egg" mean?

Which is also truly and poignantly indicative of the strain on the Grouper Fishery. How much more catastrophic would it be to the Grouper population in the Gulf and coastal waterways if the true consumer demand for Grouper were met 100% on a daily basis.? Why it might even seem like today;s consequences are the logical conclusion. It is truly unsustainable and is wiping out our native fish stocks, and with global warming, migration and habitation will indubiably change…so many evolutionary and extinction stressors.

Luckily the Florida Fish and Game responded appropriately to allow stocks to recover.

anyone for a poached egg?

Do you know the swirl or tornadic technique for poached? A tsp. of vinegar?

I’m sorry again, to hijack from the discussion of eggs and grouper, but y’all will not believe this.

That stupid restaurant did it again.

I know. I said I wouldn’t go back. Today, the drive thru line was too long at another place, and this place is right on my way – and the food is good – so I thought I’d give them another shot, just won’t bother ordering the grouper tacos.

God, I am stupid.

Today, I order the grouper hoagie, which is, you guessed it, “served with chips.” Order-taker doesn’t ask if I want chips. He does ask if I want a drink. “Yes,” I say, “I’ll take a fountain drink to go.” He then says, “Did you want one of these drinks from the cooler or a fountain drink.” He had no discernible accent and appeared to be a native speaker of English. I distinctly and clearly said “fountain drink” but he had to ask. I repeat that I want a fountain drink, pay, and he walks away. He’s supposed to hand over an empty cup. I roll my eyes and just help myself to a cup and get my drink. A few minutes later, another kid comes by with my lunch. I open the bag. Just my samich. I open the clamshell thingy, still just a samich.

I go back up to the counter and grab a menu to doublecheck. Yep, still says “served with chips.” Order-deliverer asks if I need something. Apparently, I’m thinking, I must be stupid because “served with…” obviously means I have to ask for everything. I ask him to tell me what served with chips means because clearly, I do not understand how to order off this menu. He laughs and hands me a bag of chips.

Gah!

The sandwich was delicious; however… I think they left off the white cheddar… as stated clearly on the menu. :smack:

Too funny. It’s the grouper. It has mind confusing powers!

Well, I’d probably hazard a guess that maybe their menu or ordering system might be contributing to the problem in the kitchen, that menu is kind of a mess, aspiring to be a “clever” and “easy” system, when really it is just a nouveau “mongolian grill”. Can’t account for the servers inattention? Decidely not all that and a bag of chips.

Maybe you should fill out one of “their ordering forms” check off all the items you would like on the sandwich or Tacos and say… “I’ll have the Grouper Hoagie/Tacos with this on it”. Make a notation at the bottom… “all that and a bag of chips”

I’ve done that and verbally stated everything that the menu states comes with (that I want) as well. I’ve even written in large letters “+ FOUNTAIN DRINK TO GO!!!” They will look up from the menu and ask, “do you want a drink?” And then “For here or to go?” And then I wonder if they can read OR understand English. Somehow, they* still* manage to fuck it up.

Wow.

So the US default is cooked to death from a UK perspective? Never order them in the US as an egg needs bacon and I cannot bear US bacon so I go for pancakes and syrup instead.

If you guys come to the UK then “over medium” is probably the default fried egg here, unless you specify that is (and places in the UK are generally a lot less responsive to specific egg desires than the US I would guess).

No, over easy and sunny side up are pretty much the most common ways to take a fried egg in the US, and an over easy eggy weggy is probably in the pan for a lesser length of time than a typical British Sunny side up or basted egg.

… which might be why the flipped or “over” style of egg took off in the US but failed to become popular elsewhere. It was probably an innovation of the short order style of flinging hash where speed and quantity counted. It just makes sense that an egg cooked on both sides cooks faster. Saves seconds.

I would’ve said it was just ‘sunny side up’. Not that we would ever use that term.

Umm… something that I noticed earlier and just never really commented on. But, from the link to that menu… “Menu Reality Eat local. Be environmentally conscious. Shoot Freezers.” ??? Ummm… is there something I am missing? Is that some kind of crazy Engrish, or something? I just can’t puzzle it out? Shoot freezers…Whaaa?

I mean, I’m pretty sure from the name and type of restaurant that the people (or likely family) that own and operate this restaurant are probably Chinese (Maybe Korean). But you reassure us there is no language problem, so I don’t know. But it seems like this type of Resstaurant very obviously is just an updated iteration of the Chinese Buffets and “Jade Garden” type of franchise. It might have a high turnover of “guest workers” like its mother spawn… same industry new storefront.

Everywhere I’ve ever been, people who ask for “over-easy” generally get over medium - which is probably what they actually want anyway.

Well, similarly, I don’t think I’ve ever overheard one of my friends, family, or aquaintenances, nor somebody in a diner or truckstop ever order their eggs “over medium”. Not once. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t people who order them that way. I’m sure if I were a server at a waffle house or a truckstop, I might have heard of it, but I always hear people ordering “over easy” or specifying “over easy, runny whites” or “over easy, slightly undercooked”.

It’s kind of funny. I could see a spoof of the Political Compass Test being done with Your Egg Preference. Are you Eggdolf Hitler Or Dalai Omelette?

I like my eggs sunny-side up, only when the the whites start to get firm, I add a couple tablespoons of water and cover with a lid. This steams the whites on top so they are not too runny, but the yolk stays liquid.

What is this called?

It’s called, “make your own frickin’ eggs.”

Looking at the “story” tab, they seem to not have a freezer in the store, and only use fresh ingredients. Now I don’t know how they can manage that, but that’s the claim. Because they couldn’t afford a freezer, and because fresh is better. So “shoot freezers” is Tallahassee for “take your gun and shoot freezers, rather than use them in restaurants, because frozen food isn’t as tasty as fresh”. Or something like that. But the language on that page isn’t the best, either.

If people are getting what they want, maybe “over easy” doesn’t mean what you think it means?

Well, there is the whole descriptivist dilemma. People generally say "over easy’ and mean “cooked on both sides.”

Sling hash for a while and you will quickly tire of people ordering eggs over easy and then complaining because the white isn’t cooked all the way. It’s common for people to give up and just do them to medium by default.

Next time you breakfast with someone and they order ‘over easy’ ask them what they mean. A surprising number if people think the ‘easy’ means 'careful not to break the yolk.

Sent with my fat fingers using Tapatalk.

This is the answer. The name of the place is 1 Fresh, emphasis on fresh. The owner has placed a number of somewhat clever little signs all over the place. Things like, “We’ll bus your table. You get on with your life.” So, shoot your freezer is definitely “frozen food sucks.”

BTW, I think it’s funny about the assumption that the owners are Asian. The owner is 100% bona fide Southern Bubba caucasian. If you get on his mailing list, you’ll hear all about his golf game and how FSU is doing. I have never seen any Asians working there. Tends to be Latinos or black guys in the kitchen and white or black college students up front.

Why is it that, in the home, women are generally expected to do the cooking or know how at least, but in a restaurant, all the chefs and cooks are men? I can’t think of one restaurant that I go to where I’ve seen or been aware that the chef is female. If I knew of a place, I’d go there constantly.
