What do you think MM thinks when he’s just at some random place and he here’s Lunatic Fringe?
I’ve tried to parse the OP, and I can’t. Anyone else wanna try?
… hears Lunatic Fringe?
Who?
I think it helps if you’ve seen Vision Quest (which, sadly, I haven’t.)
Maybe he feels the resistance…or the thunder.
Sometimes pineapples mean different things but I don’t always agree so I find it is easier to use my eraser instead of the peacock.
Lunatic Fringe was one of the songs on the soundtrack to the Matthew Modine movie Vision Quest. Never saw Vision Quest, so I don’t know the context, but I imagine Modine thinks something along the lines of “Hey, there’s that song from that movie I made twenty-five years ago.”
Charlie is the functionally illiterate janitor on the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I’m just saying.
Google to the Rescue!
“Lunatic Fringe” seems to have been a song in the movie “Vision Quest,” starring Mr. Modine back in 1985. I have not seen the film, and am at work so I cannot play the song to tell if I have ever heard it before.
I do not fnd any other connections, so my guess as to his thoughts would be “I wonder if I’m still getting royalties from that film?”
(Curses! Ninja’d again!)
He probably thinks, “Damn you, Tom Cruise! You get a song that’s played at every wedding in the country and all I get is Lunatic Fringe! Aaarrrrghghgh!”
On second thought, probably not.

I’m not Dean, but I think he mows his lawn.
It’s very likely that Modine never heard the song during production of the movie. Music is usually added much, much later. And a lot of actors don’t watch their own movies over and over, so the song might not mean much at all to h im.
Well, the OP has the “functionally illiterate” part down.
