What does sheepskin feel like?

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? I know that cowhide can be pretty smooth when treated properly. (We’ve all owned leather belts and shoes after all, right?) I presume untreated cowhide is pretty coarse, and that pigskin has a similar texture. Also, having handled numerous reptiles in my time, I know that snakeskin has a smooth, dry, scaly feel to it.

But what about sheepskin? What does it feel like?

I have no idea about sheepskin made into leather type products. I am not sure that it is. Here in Australia we have heaps of sheepskin products, but it is always with the wool still on. We have it as mats and underlays for bedding and rugs for babies and wooly things around car steering wheels and ugh boots and hats and jackets … but always wooly. Soft and lovely and warm.

Tanned sheep leather feels like tanned cow leather. I have a sheep leather jacket.

I’ve never felt untreated sheepskin that’s been separated from its sheep, but freshly shorn sheep feel soft & nice, and they like to be petted.

This is to easy.

Finally!

The SDMB, it does not disappoint.

I came in, seeing only 4 replies, hoping against hope I could be the first mention of the SDMB’s own sheep fanatic. I am disappointed.

I thought he was talking about sheepskin in a different place…

What, like the back of a Volkswagen?
