Made him cry… something.
The works of Gary Larson, and Randal Munroe?
And I’d like to assure people everywhere that, as a relatively new Uncle myself, I’m personally working to fight this hurtful stereotype by posting non-right wing embarrassing, lunatic screeds on Facebook.
Like my idea to combat the environmental damage caused by illicit Marijuana cultivation in the California backcountry with a modest program of legalization, regulation…and nuclear powered barges!
Ewe must be gnu to the internet.
If you’re talking to me: No I’m fine. Did you want to discuss something else? Here?
Not just you, but a few posters seemed upset by this joke and it left me scratching my head. People acted like the premise was complete gibberish, but I posted three links with the same premise and I found all of those on the first page of google by searching for “conservative uncle.” In fact, in 2014, the DNC hosted a website called www.yourrepublicanuncle.com showing it was such a hackneyed premise even the leadership of a major American party knew what it was. It was also just a few seconds long joke among a longer monologue during the Emmys, exactly the kind of place you expect to hear safe pablum for the masses.
The reason the joke fails so badly and it is worth discussing (And no one here is not here discussing it. I’m looking at you…) is that Donald Trump is not a “conservative”. He is disrupting the republican process, and is absolutely feared and detested by the older conservative establishment. He has even vowed not to appear on Fox news now! And they’re not going to have him, for now. He is a New York business man, long time Democrat and democratic contributor. He’s saying the first things that come into his head and creating all kinds of problems, yet he continues to rise in polls, frustrating the conservative establishment even further.
He’s basically a radical panderer. A line that lukewarm might be applied to Pat Buchanan, or Santorum, or Huckabee, even Lyndon Larouche, but not Trump. There’s plenty of comedy in Trump. I agree he is a nut like your uncle but a joke about Trump ought to be about Trump, or else it will go right past most people. Emmy jokes ought to be timely, even if they don’t have an edge (Which I disagree with you about) . But this one was just a rusty spoon, a day late and a dollar short. fail.
I don’t think I said that we shouldn’t be discussing the joke, only that the reactions seemed a little shrill for a joke that appeared on the Emmys, a program I expect was aired in every common room in every senior care center in North America.
As for Trump not being a conservative, it’s odd that he’s the front runner of the GOP’s primary, wants to build a border fence and that people have been shouting “white power” at his rallies, that’s more a Dennis Kucinich thing.
You’re creating a little case for the jokes existence, not a very good one though. I was satirizing the joke and calling it stupid. I was empathizing with the OP and having a laugh. To me that’s not shrill. BTW you’re in a thread on a forum.
Awards shows are just as edgy as anything else if not more and TIMELY, especially. Professionals write the jokes. Trump is not news for being an old conservative uncle type.
If the joke had come last year it would have made no sense at all considering Trumps political history. Now that he is a weird political animal tearing the Rebub party apart it’s too late to make a tired conservative uncle joke, if such a thing existed. He is appealing to racists, bigots and yahoos of all kinds not necessarily to cranky uncles. They were probably too scared to have a real joke in there about trumps current role, so they went meaningless.
He’s no True Conservative, you mean. Racist, sexist, birther, anti-vaxxer, against common core, calls climate change a hoax, against the deal with Iran, against estate and corporate income tax.
Yeah, Bernie Sanders better watch out, because Trump is stealing all his supporters.
