Television numbers are down, and they seem kind of embarrassingly retro these days. Other than pageant moms what’s driving these beauty pageant productions?
Most guys I know could care less about these contests, and it seems to be more or less a female centric production all around. What do girls/women really get out of these “I’m the prettiest and the best” contests?
Couldn’t care less. You care so little that you could **not **care less. If you could care less, then you are cordially invited to do so.
</minor nitpick hijack that caught my eye and has always rankled>
I think what drives beauty pageants is, like much of the fashion/beauty industry, hype and advertising. If something is sold strongly enough to a large enough crowd of people, enough of them start to believe it and support it to make it a paying proposition.
At this point I’m going to have to go with “inertia”. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if something comparative to the X-Games <-> Olympics comes in to replace it at some point. I think you’d have a hard time killing off a competition for the world’s greatest babe ad eternum.
I think you need to be a little more sophisticated about contextual linguistics. While the term may seem to be a fat little pigeon for grammar hawks it does not mean precisely the same thing as “couldn’t care less” in the way it is used or the implied intonation. It’s a common nonsense idiom and intended to be a bit more ironical than the “logically” proper usage.
The next time someone tells you they’ve fallen “head over heels” in love will you tell them it should be “head over heels over head over heels”?
Institutions tend to protect themselves. I’m sure they do advertising, recruiting, or whatever to keep the yokels coming. As far as I’m concerned they are preying on vulnerable children through retarded parents.
Depends on the pageant. One of my nieces collected enough scholarships to pay for both her bachelors and masters. She was also smart enough to get enough sponsors to offset most of the costs. She says about a third of the girls she met doing it were after college funds and the rest were pageant babies who’s been doing it all their lives thanks to mommy’s desire to have the prettiest baby in teh whole wide world.
A secretary for a nearby town council wants to do it to increase leadership. Because nothing says “leadership” like competing in a beauty pageant, then aiming high to be the secretary for a podunk town council.
