What exactly *is* the dog commonly known as a pitbull?

You know them when you see themin dog attack videos or on the end of leashes coming towards you in the park, but some people say there are not classic American pitbull terriersbut “something else”.

And per the wiki article on Pit Bulls I’m not talking about confusion with a bunch of other breeds. \

This is the dog I’m talking about. What is it really if not an American Pitbull Terrier?

American Pitbull Terriers are pit bulls. Most of the statistics I’ve found that sort dogs by breeds list presa canarios, boxers, and bulldog breeds separately from pit bulls. I haven’t heard of some of the breeds in your list, so they might be lumped in with pit bulls.

Pit bulls aren’t as narrowly defined as some other breeds, like poodles or dalmations or greyhounds. There’s probably a lot more genetic variance among pit bulls than other purebreeds.

American Staffordshire Terrier? Some of the difference in looks might have to do with build - I’ve heard that in dog fighting, people will hang cuts of meat and the pit bull will clamp it’s teeth to it and hang off of the ground. This, from what I understand, is to strengthen the jaws and other muscles of the head and neck. That might have to do with the meatier-headed pit in your first picture.

Also, the cropping of the ears make them not only look more menacing, but I think gives one less thing for the other dog in the fight to bite.

It looks like a “staffy” to me too. Really good natured dogs in my experience.
