I have actually witnessed introductions such as described. I work on a university campus. Young, gay men who have recently come out of the closet are sometimes prone to introduce themselves by “Hello, I am _____ and I suck cock.”
Teenage/very young adult behavior. Analogous, perhaps, to the newly converted always being the most extreme; also possibly related to the PC atmosphere on a lot of college campuses where the (supposedly) unprivileged get to challenge the (supposedly) privileged to show their PC credentials by not being shocked.
So, not representative of general population behavior.
Enlightened people (like me) can be repulsed, but also believe in human rights. Repulsed bible thumpers, though, can use their religion as a shield to make their revulsion public. I think it’s despicable and cowardly. FWIW I’m certain there are at least some bible thumpers that are genuine in their concern as a biblical manner, but most of them use the bible as an excuse not to grow up.
Additional FWIW, by “bible thumper” I’m only including a certain subset of Christians that tend towards other silly things like young Earth, bible literalism, etc. You know the type.

That’s a different problem, dahlin’. You don’t have a problem with homosexuality, you have a problem with a certain outward behavior which for lack of a better word I shall hereby dub hypergirly; I have a problem with that kind of behavior as well, but I have a problem with it both in males and in females, and I have a problem with it because I’ve only met one person who did it and who could be trusted (he also was the only person I’ve met who seemed to come by it naturally and not as a “look at me, I’m so cute!” affectation). And while there are some gays who toooootally do it drop hand, it’s not exclusive to them, at all. In fact and as you point out yourself, it’s copied from certain women (the type one may describe as being fond of enchanting snakes and distributing poison).
Concur. I’ve watched two friends come out in their twenties. Both immediately burst into flame, and spent the next year or two covering their office doors in rainbow flags and pink triangles. (One actually yelled “breeders!” at a straight couple on the street, one drunken night. He’s embarrassed about that now.) Both stopped acting like being gay was the sum and whole of their identities as they got older and a little more mature.
Come to that, I did the same thing for a couple of years when I first admitted I didn’t believe in God. Darwin fish T-shirts, Flying Spaghetti Monster avatar on Facebook, emails from the American Humanist Association and Americans For Separation of Church and State. I’m just now getting over the need to make sure everyone I meet knows I’m an atheist. I’m sure I was a dick at times.
No, you’re not the only one. When my closest friend came out was when I discovered exactly how homophobic I was. It’s much less, but I still do have those lingering prejudices that were instilled when I was a child playing “Smear the Queer” with my friends in the 70’s.

That is the part that always struck me as odd in the equation. As straight men we can watch girl-on-girl, three way, and hetero anal – possibly not admitting it but we watch it. Why should we react different if its identified as gay or lesbian? I know all the standard answers, many of which are in this thread, but there is still some room for confusion - at least to me.
Speaking for myself, I was just seduced by the opportunity to post “I don’t care one way or another, couldn’t possibly care less”, and have it be an opinion, and an enlightened one at that, rather than threadshitting. I mean, how often do you get a chance to do that?

This, exactly, is how I feel. People are just people, regardless of who/what they worship, how they play, what they eat, whatever. My gay and lesbian friends are concerned about their health, finances, kids, pets, aging parents, and careers, just like everyone else. What they do together in private is irrelevant.
I’ve asked about a million people what two gay people do sexually that two straight people aren’t doing somewhere. So far, I’ve yet to get a valid answer.

This right here. I try to fight the good fight wherever I can, to the point of sponsoring the Black Student Union and working with the Gay-Straight Alliance on campus. Ingrained upbringing is hard to fight, and it takes effort and honesty to do so. But no matter how hard I try, I still can’t accept Canadians. The hockey, the poutine…who does sick shit like that?
